Hemi in WJ

Hi, In the process of putting a Hemi in my WJ - 2001 4.7 originally. It is in, mounts built, exhaust hooked up etc. Bolted to the 545RFE just fine, used the 4.7 flex plate and took a collar out of the Hemi crank that was for the 8 speed I believe. The article in wjjeeps.com everyone refers to is totally wrong. It fits perfectly.

Question is has anybody done this swap and if so what did you use for the engine management system? There are a bunch of options - hotwire said they had no problem making a harness for a late model computer to go right in - for $1800 + computers. Can use the Holley system with separate trans controller, FAST has some stuff. Was hoping to just update to NGC from early RAM but that appears to be a dead end in tuning. The megasquirt gold plugs right in to everything on the engine and can allegedly control the VVT if I want to figure it out.

I am using the Eagle generation Hemi - 2014 - so would like to control the VVT and MDS but can lock them out if needed. Would like to keep though so I get all 395 HP + 25mpg it can do.

Any input on the controller?

Plan on putting some pictures together of what I have already done if anyone is interested. Thanks!

Hi, here is a picture of the engine in place, showing it clears steering fine. Using factory Ram manifold on drivers side and WK2 jeep manifold on passenger side. Have mocked up A/c, PS & Alt and they fit fine. No cutting on Jeep. The mounts we built use factory bolt holes and are 3/16" plate so they are not going anywhere!

If someone has put even GM in TJ or WJ just need to know how they hooked into ECM. After talking to Hotwire they keep the stock computer to run gauges and all the other modules in vehicle. For $1800 they will build a new harness but that is crazy money for hooking up a couple dozen wires from the old harness to a new engine computer.

I know you need to feed a tach signal and manifold pressure for the trans to work. Then feed for gauges - water temp etc. Once that is done the engine will run it's own computer and think it is still in the Ram. The jeep will still think there is a 4.7 in there and go about doing it's other functions.

When you do a swap in a TJ or something like that you need to do the same thing. Should not be that hard. Certainly not $1800 hard since that is just the wiring, they still add $$$ on for the engine computer.

Any ideas?

Hey there, love that you are getting this done! Any update on the engine management? Can you re-post the pictures since Photobucket decided to be a bunch of losers and stopped allowing hosting, we can't see the photos anymore. I would love to snag the pictures as proof it can fit! There have been lots of talk about this on the Facebook WJ groups and people, who have never even tried to swap in a Hemi, are saying it cannot be done.

what was the donor vehicle or new crate engine? Should be able to use the computers and harness from the year vehicle it came from. Of course HEMI's came with a 545 earlier on so programming the right PCM/TCM shouldn't really be a big ordeal. I would bet someone could sell the computers set to your app and you just supply the harness.
