How many are too many? Missing bolts from oil pan...

I replaced my rear main seal yesterday and while my buddy and I were putting the oil pan back on we ran into a couple of issues. Two of the bolt holes in the bottom of the block striped on us and one of the bolts broke while torquing it.

Not having many options at the moment, we filled her back up with oil and drove the WJ around to see if it would leak. I have driven it twice since, approx. 30 miles, and haven't had any oil leaks yet. The two striped holes are in the front left corner of the oil pan and the broken bolt is on the left side near the exhaust.

Any recommendations on what I should do? Should I spend the $$$ and take it to a machine shop and have them re-thread the two holes and drill out the broken bolt? Or should I throw some extra RVT on those spots and not worry too much about it?

If it doesn't leak right now I would say you are ok for the short term, but the potential for a leak would always be in the back of my mind, I would rather go have it fixed and know it wont be a problem down the road, far from home, on a cold winter night lol.

That is what I have been thinking as well. Anyone know what a machinist might charge to do work like this? I don't want to go into this blind and pay way more than I should.

Or...has anyone used Heli-Coil to re-thread anything? Is it fairly simple to do or should I let a professional handle it?

Heli-coils are fairly easy to use, you only need to have (or loan) the right tool to put them in. Also the existing hole will have to be made bigger with a drill to make the new thread for the heli-coil. But maybe if you never have done this, it would be better to bring it to a professional. Shouldn´t be that expensive.

Get the appropriate sized "easy out" and give that a shot. You drill the bolt (the part left inside the block) then insert the easy out, tap it with a hammer to get it to bite, then remove the easy out and bolt with wrench. Then you just replace the bolt with a new one of the same size. You don't need to drill a bigger hole and tap it unless the easy-out doesn't work. They are also called "Bolt extractors"

My Mustang had issues with blowing spark plugs out of the head and stripping out the hole. Heli-coils would work some times, but not others. The best option I found was to use a time-sert.

I'll also second that if you haven't done it before, you may want to consider letting a shop do it.

Oh and you shouldn't need a machinist....any 1/2 decent mechanic can do this. The problem is finding a 1/2 decent mechanic. Not a "part replacer".
I've done this quite a few times to get bolts out. It's a PITA and it sucks, but it works.

I would suggest take it to a mechanic and let him fix it. You dont want to have any issues and be stuck somewhere and have a blown tranny. I dont know how much it could cost but definately cheaper than a new tranny.

To emphasis your point even more, we're not talking about a tranny here. If the oil were to leak out, that's a seized engine. Even more expensive than a tranny.

I for sure second the easy out/screw extractor.

1- use a center punch and punch the center, if you can
2- drill the bolt in the block
3- insert screw extractor and tap with hammer
4- use crescent wrench (personal preference) to get it out.

if that doesnt work, drill and re-tap it. i wouldnt use a heli-coil. just a personal preference though. good luck!


i one time broke the bolt for the oil dip stick. its far from how it should be, but oh well. it holds the dipstick tube just fine and its tight.
