OBD self test FAIL

I just bought a '04 WJ that failed smog with this message from the
smog check station:
"This vehicle failed the MIL/Check Engine Light due to failure to successfully
complete all OBD self tests."

All emission test results were "Pass".

When I try to check for any codes via the "on/off,on/off,on/off,on ignition
all I get is the mileage and the "check guages" light stays on. All the guages
seem to be functioning properly.

What gives?

Re: OBD self test FAIL

This seems to be 1 time too much on/off.
It should be: on/off, on/off , on.
The odometer should show "DONE"when all ok, or any fault code.

Thanks Frango, that did the trick. Now it reads "done". Next question,
is that all there is to the "self test"? Previous owner was under the impression
that the car had not been driven far enough after the last service to finish
relearning the settings.

That is quite possible, after clearing codes or resetting the computer in some way like pulling the battery, it loses the stored info and has to re-check the emissions systems. The vehicle must be driven a certain number of times and meet certain other parameters to complete the self check.

Re: OBD self test FAIL

If you just bought this start praying!

obdII monitors not run is an indication of the codes having been recently cleared. This can indicate that maybe there was a check engine light they didnt want to repair and cleared the codes before you came over and looked at it.

Ultimately your going to need to drive it for a week or so and so long as you have some freeway stints and city stints as well as some cold soaks (sitting overnight) It should run the monitors.
