Re: Odd sound from engine.

I also would recommend to use a synthetic 5W30 of a known brand oil company.
I have used several brands in mine and had the valve cover off last week and was surprised how clean the internals where after 162.000 km. No sludge at all and all clean and shiny. I want to pull my oil pan soon to check if the oil pump screen is clean as well.
Regarding the use of Seafoam, you have to check regulary the color of the oil, if it gets darker rapidly, you better change it soon, because the seafoam is doing its job and is removing sludge and other deposits.
I don't think any additives are necessary to mix with the oil.

Re: Odd sound from engine.

Welcome to the garage.
Why do you want to change the lash adjusters when they seem to be fine?
If the lash adjusters donīt work well, the engine will make a ticking sound, but no loud knock, as you described.
Did you start it again after the first time it made the loud knock? I would suspect some mechanical damage inside the engine. I would do a compression check and see how cylinders 1 and 2 are compared to the others.

Re: Odd sound from engine.

You just have to compress the lash adjuster and while holding it in the engine oil, slowly release the adjuster. The spring will let it expand and will take the oil in. If you do this several times, without removing the adjuster from the oil, all or most of the air will be gone. During operation any air left in the adjuster will be bled out.

15W40 for a 4.7 is much too thick. It uses 5W30.
The thicker oil will flow more slowly but increases the oil pressure. Especially during cold starts (cold engine) it will take longer for the oil to reach the heads and premature wear could be the result.
In fact the thinner the oil is at startup, the better. (this is the first number of the oil spec (15)
The second number is showing how the oil is at operating temperature (40). The 4.7 needs a 30. Only for a worn engine you could use a thicker oil to increase the oil pressure.
By the way, when you removed the valve covers, all rocker arms where in their respective places? They could fall off when a lash adjuster doesnīt work properly. Did you check the lash adjusters for being spongy? To do this, you will have to turn the engine over by hand (socket on the balancer pulley) to put each cylinder in the compresion stroke, so that the valves are not actuated.

My 2002 4.7L used to do that all the time. I see a lot of talk here about lifters, oil and such but no one mentioned what it really is... it's one of the fender mounted emission system components that has a ball check valve. It sounds exactly like a bad lifter. And like you mention, it goes away after a few minutes.

Mine did that for 12 years and never caused any other problem other than the ticking noise... LOL.

The fender mounted purge solenoid valve should not make any sound directly after startup. The PCM will pulse it after warming up and indeed that can make a ticking noise. They tried to isolate it a bit with a rubber extension piece, which partly worked.

I use full synthetic in my jeep, but it is what you prefer. Synthetic has some advantages which makes it my preference.
If you can move the rockerarm, then probably the lash adjuster is not working well, there should be no play at all.
