Re: Replaced Fuel Filter

Monkey see...monkey do...here are my pics.

I really had to wrestle with the black disconnect, but managed to get it off finally. I hosed the whole area down with some PB a few days ago, and got some time today to get under there. I unbolted it first and had easier access to the connections. The blue and white one disconnected relatively easy with no tools. Pinch the tabs together and pull. The black one was a hooker. I finally got it to go, but I was under there for an hour cursing at it with a screwdriver, a small crescent wrench, you name it. It finally gave and the filter came off in my hand. Make sure you're pushing that black plastic collar up into the line while you pull on the filter itself.

After I bolted the new one back up, closed the gas tank lid, put the fuel pump relay in, and turned the key, it sputtered once and then fired right up. No leaks. I then cut the old one open for some pics of the guts. My Jeep's got 87k on it. I bought it with 68k and don't know what kind of back country hillbilly gas was used in it before. For what it's worth, I only run Shell, and regularly squeeze some Lucas in the tank so I can sleep better at night. The fuel that oozed out did not look dirty, but the filter sure did.

Re: Replaced Fuel Filter

Damnit, now I definitely have to go back under there and try this again. At least now I have your guys' experience to help me through it! If for no reason other than that damn pressure regulator, went through 2 of those on my 93 4.0L ZJ less than 50k miles apart. At least there it was right up on the fuel rail. I tried like you did Tony, unbolting it first. Much easier to get at the hoses. Now if I can just get them apart....

Re: Replaced Fuel Filter

I suggest you work on the black quick-disconnect first before removing the 10mm screws and working on the two pinch ones. Its kinda hard pushing the disco with the fuel filter moving, nothing to push it back. Dont know how Mr. Amber Alert aka. Tony managed to do it, but I did had a hard time with it.....

YES! I think we just found Tony's new nickname here!

I will have to try both ways, but the way Tony babies his jeep it probably came apart on its own for him....

Re: Replaced Fuel Filter

You can try it both ways if you want...but I'll stick with the ladies, thank you very much.

Actually, MON is right...you might be better off wrestling with the black connection while it's still mounted up. For me, once I had the other two lines off and the bolts out, the filter dropped down far enough where I was able to pin it against the rear crossmember. The only good thing was it brought it down to an easier place to see it and handle it. Plus I didn't want to be directly under it in case it spewed...which it did. It comes down far enough were you might be able to vise grip it to something under there too.

So far, I've got mixed reviews. I ran it for awhile last night after I was done and it was fine. This morning on my way to work it would hum at idle and at low throttle. When i get into the pedal even a little, it shuts right up. The hum is pretty loud too. 1/2 way to work, it stopped humming, then as I pull into the parking lot, it started again. I'm wondering if it's air trapped in there maybe? Going to crawl back under tonight to get another look while it's running. Maybe I can narrow it down.

Re: Replaced Fuel Filter

Still hummin' like a mother. Almost sounds like a viking horn, but playing the same annoying note all the time. Hit the gas, and it's gone. Hopefully I didn't eff anything up. I also found out based on a little homework that the Napa Gold and Wix are the same.
