Re: Starting Problems 4.7

The only relay I've checked so far is the fuel pump relay. Will check auto shutdown today as well as all connections leading to PCM. I'll get back with you later, thanks again.

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

Frango,, Checked all relays and fuses in PDC, all good. Checked connection at firewall all good. only connection i have not checked is the crankshaft sensor, have to pull starter. Would the crankshaft sensor cause all this not too work. How can I tell if PCM is getting power or not?

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

Frango, Checked all relays their good. Checked all fuses no problems. How can I determine if pcm is getting power? Only connection I haven
't checked is the crankshaft sensor but need to pull strarter to do that. Must be getting power to PCD or engine wouldn't crank. Am I doing the key off and on bit to get the codes right? Or am I not getting codes because PCM not powered? Thanks for help

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

If thew PCM doesnt get a crank signal within a couple seconds of energizing it will shut the ASD off, typically you should get a CKP sensor if there is a problem with that... On chrysler vehicles sometimes you need to crank it for a while for it to click that something is wrong, hook a charger or jump box up to it and crank it for 15 seconds stop give it a 15 seconds or so, then crank it another 15, repeat that 2-3 times then check for codes.

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

That you don't get "DONE"in the odometer when doing the keydance, seems to me that the PCM has no power. Do you have an OBDII reader to see if it can connect to the PCM?

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

I'll give it a try, tonite and get back with you. Would the sentry system keep engine from starting if I had it unplugged for a couple weeks. Possibly not recognizing key? When I replaced engine I had unplugged from pcm to get harnes out of way. Thanks

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

As far as i know it should keep the key codes in a non-volatile memory. Also the fuel pump should still run for 3 secs. with ignition switch in on and you should be able to connect to the PCM with a ODBII scanner or doing the keydance.
Did you already check fuse 12 on the junction block under the steering wheel? That one is the supply for the auto shutdown and for the fuel pump relay.

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

I've checked all fuses and relays, in the cab and outside in PDC, no bad fuses or relays. Could having a bad crankcase sensor do all this? My next step is to use odbII scanner. I'll get back with you, if you think of anything else get back with me. What's stumping me is that everything was working before i pulled engine. Thanks

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

A bad crank sensor for sure will inhibit the engine from starting, but the PCM should still be powered. You did check all the connectors, but did you disconnect them as well, to see if no pins where pushed back?
Try with the OBDII scanner and try the crank trick which 2005JGC mentioned.

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

Hadn't thought about that. I did disconnect the Pcm from the harness and some pins could of been misaligned I suppose. I'll check that and the crank sensor. Thanks Frank

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

the pcm is totally possible, personally I just lean more towards much more unlikely due to it working before the transplant then not working afterwards... again still possible, just kinda further down my list of possible causes.

Have you ever successfully done the key dance prior? just making sure your doing it right, (starting from) off to on to off to on to off to on (and leave it on)... if you screw up I typically pull the key out and open the door then try again. Ultimately and OBDII scanner is decently cheap and now a days its an important tool for most cars on the road. It wont fix all your problems or tell you exactly whats wrong all the time but if your a guy that can swap a motor a cheap code reader is WELL worth the investment IMO

Re: Starting Problems 4.7

This is the first Jeep I've owned, so never done the dance. I did get something strange the one time i tried. Nothing came up on odometer, but did get message in console above visor. " open circuit maintenance reguired" and just after three beeps followed by another three beeps. Thought this might refer to code 33 looked it up came back air conditioning? I'd really like to figure this out, want to buy another jeep same year, slightly better condition but with similar problem. If I can't figure this one out no way wife going to let me buy another ha ha!
