swapping a 02 4.7ho in a 02 4.0 WJ

Ok I have an 02 WJ with a 4.0, Im thinking of swapping an 02 4.7 ho into it. I understand and know it would be easier to just buy one, but im not lazy and I am a very experienced mechanic. I enjoying doing engine swaps.

This is the feed back I would like to get:
Has anyone done it? If so what did it take to get it done, as in engine, motor mounts, tranny, wiring, pcm, any problemsm, etc......?

Since the freakin Jeep comes with the 4.7 HO as an option in that vehicle and for that year, honestly you should just be able to do a quick swap. I have read some posts on this and no one seems to give any advise or know. I am pretty serious about doing this and would like some input on this, besides "sell it and buy one with the 4.7 in it". Thats not what im looking to do. Thanks

Re: swapping a 02 4.7ho in a 02 4.0 WJ

I think you have to swap Transmissions also....Since the 4.0L is an Inline engine and the 4.7L and 4.7L H.O. are both V8's I think engine mounts will be different also! PCM will have to change, probably some wiring.

Just buy a 4.7L and add 4.7L H.O. Cams!

In addition to the regular stuff.

You have to change the front Drive shaft.

Same motor mounts.

The Tranny you have already could be either the 45RFE or the 42RE. You would need the 45RFE re-programmed to make it a 545RFE since they both have the same gearing, or a 545RFE out of the V8.

all you would need is the tcm from an 02 and up Grand Cherokee with the 545rfe...it would be plug and play and make the 45rfe...a 545rfe.

Re: swapping a 02 4.7ho in a 02 4.0 WJ

The 545RFE transmissions were never mated to the 4.0. You would have a 42RE in your 4.0. Therefore you need the 4.7 HO and the 545rfe transmission along with the accompanying modules and wiring harnesses.
That much I know, not sure what else other than what has been already mentioned.
Your best bet would be to buy a 4.7 HO donor and swap the entire drive train, including the front and rear axles to obtain Quadra Drive, unless you prefer Selec-Trac, as many do.

Re: swapping a 02 4.7ho in a 02 4.0 WJ

I would suggest instead of swapping to a V8, stroke that bad boy out, you can convert it to a 5.0 I6 making rougly 300-350 HP and will be able to smoke all the V8s and you wont go nuts with different model ecms or tooth issues on the tranny.
