Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

Hey guys,

Looking for some "collective wisdom" here...

Wet day here in Northern Virginia, and I was reminded that my T-case doesn't do its job very well. 02 WJ Laredo SE 4.7.

I have noticed over the last few years the right tire will break free, and maybe kick into all wheel at some point. Dropping it into 4low works like a champ, it is just the full time that doesn't.

With the winter coming and a 9 year old passenger (who has a barbie Jeep BTW!), I was looking for some insight. I have not changed any fluids, but the transmission is on my list this week. Should I change fluids, or is this an adjustment? I have heard about adjusting the tranny bands, is that necessary/part of the issue? Also, no codes being thrown.

Thanks in advance for helping, and this forum is great! I am new, but well acclimated at this point. Thanks...Ben

Well I have the same T-case as you. You should change the fluid in the T-case. Which tire will break free? Hardly mine breaks free if it's raining and I press the pedal too hard.(Right Rear Tire).

Dropping it into Low with lock at the wheels for no Slippage. (Make sure you don't go over 25 MPH in 4-Low!)

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

Do you have even tire wear on all 4 of your tires? Not having even wear can make your AWD system fail.

When you put your car in 4Low, do it kick in right away or does it have a hard time kicking in 4Low?

When was the last time you change your T-case fluid?

Is your ABS light on?

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

Marcus,

Tires are great, cause I never spin 'em! 4Low kick in perfectly, no noise, works great. Never changed the fluid, could it be that simple? Isn'nt there some sort of gyro that could be failing? If I remember last year, it wil eventually kisck in at like 3000 RPM??

No lights on at all, includoing when in 4Low.

Thanks!

Ben

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

My 2000 Limited did that all the time, and the dealer never could fix it. It was the reason I traded my 2000 off with under 40,000 miles on it.

Driving in snow you would be stuck before the front tires ever started pulling.

If you really want to hear some noise, go out and get it your Jeep and put it in 4lo and hold the brake pedal down about half way (enough to hold the jeep from moving) and give it some gas.

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

I think you should change the fluid. I'm getting my T-case and my Tranny done next week hopefully.

Here's some info if you would like to do it yourself: www.wjjeeps.com

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

im actually at my friends shop right now doing my transfer case in my 99 with the 247, the problem with the 247 is that it has a progressive coupler that constantly fails and once its done its done and you only have 2wd in AWD mode but in most cases the 4LO still works the old cases had a viscous coupler wich was great but unfortunetly they dont fit the wj model (btw dont try the 242 transfer case unless its a 242-HD the input is to short and the tires will not spin...trust me)

Re: Type 2: NV247 Quadra-Trac II Issue

the 545RFE DOES NOT have transmission bands to adjust.

Do you have the towing package? I don't remember exactly but you may just have an open diff (I'm assuming you're talking about the rear axle). I have the tow package on my '02 4.7 and I have Vari-lok on both rear and front.

The early 247 cases were very problematic (99-00), the later units were much more reliable. That being said they do tend to have a service life of about 150k, less if neglected.

Does yours do any kind of binding on tight turns? That's usually an indicator of a specific problem.
