Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

If you donīt have any signs of external leaks, you are probably burning it of via a leaking head gasket or cracked head. Did you check the overflow reservoir for any bubbles when the engine is running? Bubbles in there normally mean headgasket troubles. You can have it pressure tested or do a coolant test for combustion gasses remains. Any strange sweet smell to the exhaust gasses?
If you check the dipstick, do you see any sign of coolant? The milky substance on the oilcap doesnīt have to mean that you have coolant in the oil. When you drive short distances for example, where the engine doesnīt heat up properly, moisture will not go out of the engine and will form this brownish sludge on the cooler engine parts, like the oil cap.

Looks like I could be in the same boat as you on Coolant Problems.

Do you have white exhaust smoke that smells like burnt sugar?

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

Watched the exhaust pipe on start up this morning and didn't see any smoke at all. I'm thinking about bringing it to a shop to get it checked out. Maybe I'll ask them to do a pressure test. Not sure what else I can have them to do.

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

Coolant leaks can be a real PITA sometimes. Something as simple as a pinhole pointed at something hot could drive you crazy. If it's burning off before it can drip, you can be looking forever. Another thing you could try is REALLY cleaning the engine bay and the underside of the hood. Then run it. Check it when it's clean, it might be easier to find. Don't forget to look "up" to the underside of the hood for evidence of spray. Your fan can pretty much spread and launch coolant in such a fine mist, that a small radiator leak could be really hard to find.

A lot of times you can smell where the leak is. I know it sounds weird but coolant has a weird sweet smell. I found 2 tiny radiator leaks on our ranger work trucks where the plastic end tanks seal failed or the tank itself had a tiny hairline crack just by smelling around the engine bay.

Unfortunately when my radiator busted coolant went everywhere so it's been hard to pinpoint a smell as it was literally everywhere at one point.

Noticed a couple things with the exhaust...the other morning I noticed as my wife was driving away there was a lot of white smoke coming out the exhaust as she drove down the street. This was early morning with the temperature in the 30s so I thought that was normal. Also noticed a water puddle formed from the exhaust after the engine idled for about 5 minutes, but did not detect any smell, and it was clear.

BTW if it is a head gasket has anyone out there tried one of those sealants that you put in the cooling system. How where the results?

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

White smoke after starting up, with the engine cold and lower outside temperatures is quite normal. Also moisture condenses in the still cold exhaust pipe and you can see some waterdrips coming out the exhaust tip or at pipe joints. When this is still occuring after 20 min. drive, then there is something wrong.
Clean the engine bay with water with cold engine and prevent spraying over alternator, PCM and TCM. You first need a clean bay before you will find any external leakage.

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

So I filled it up with coolant on thanksgiving and drove about 10 miles. On sunday the overflow resevoir is empty again. I pulled the dipstick and its choclate milk with a greenish yellowish tint (coolant) and the level was well above normal. The oil cap had the same color sludge. I guess that pretty much confirms either a failed head gasket or cracked head. Am I right? Got a quote from a private mechanic (family friend) who said he can do it for $350 which i thought was pretty good.

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

That is a good deal! Sucks you have that problem though but sounds like you have found the source.

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

Keep your fingers crossed that it's just a gasket and that the coolant that has been in there hasn't caused any MAJOR damage....hopefully you dodged a bullet.

Re: Where Is My Coolant Going??

Hoping for the best. BTW thanks for all the help guys. I'll let u know what happens. Had the Jeep towed to the place last night so hopefully it'll get opened up today or tomorrow and we'll see what the damage is. I'm just hoping we haven't been driving around with that coolant in there for too long. I've checked the oil before, although not regularly, and it was always fine.
