Ok, the time has come. Today I am finally installing Gen3 projectors and a low beam HID kit. This is one of the first mods I wanted to do after joining this site, and finally have some repairs out of the way so on to mod time!

Gen3 CCFL halo projectors from ebay and a XenonDepot Volt 6000K HID kit for lows, I will be using the stock bulbs for now for turn signals and already had Silverstars in the high beams.

Old messed up housings are out!

Looks like shes got 2 black eyes!

Now, what causes this? Heat I would assume? Maybe its the anti-amber aura of Tony, the force is strong with that one! Either way I am NOT putting these into my new housings, I will have to run to the store later for some new bulbs, LEDs to come in the somewhat near future though......

Glad to see we haven't broken anything yet bro! Gonna look sweet! More Pics! Oh and it's probably acceptable to ole "Amberjack" if you put switchbacks in the turns but you better ask first:giveup:

#5 ·
Lol, I've contemplated that. At least there's a few states in between us in case it comes to :slapfight::lol:

Ok, finally some pics! I finally got it all together, after learning the hard way which wires were positive and negative. I hooked the 3 side LED's to the side marker, so they are on with the parking lights and blink with the turn signals. The halos are hooked just to the parking lights, I doubt they would last long blinking. The HID kit was easy to install, lots of wires to tuck away though. I tucked the relay harness wire for the drivers side under the hood weatherstrip, and found spots to hide both ballasts. Very easy kit to install and figure out. Here we go!

Up close, right after install:

Here is with the HID's on, not sure why my iphone picked up green...

Heres a night shot. You were right Tony, I should have done this upgrade a long time ago!

I also got my reverse bulbs working too. VLED 7watt CREE reverse bulbs, and they are wicked bright. No street lights on my street, and lots of people that like to park on the street, it makes for a difficult time backing out at night. Not a problem any more!

And one last picture for JG, I got my decals on the Jeep finally:

Nice!! Those look great! If I had known about these a few years ago, I would have bought these (but the black housings) over my replacement ones..

#9 ·
Oh yeah, these are great. I'm glad I went with the chrome housings with my body color, but the black ones are nice too. I was considering buying stock replacements about the time I found JG, ever since I have put up with the old ones until I could do this mod.

Aaron are these gen 3's? They're CCFL and I"m thinking of ditching my chrome housings for these and some tinted led tails plus some black grill mesh. Not getting rid of my chrome grill though......Never.........! What ya think? You too Amberina.

#13 ·
Dave those are gen 1 or 2 I can't remember... Gen 3 utilize the stock bottom light sockets. That said Tony had these before his gen 3's, non ccfl but the led halo's, and then I bought them off him and had them for a few months but the led halo's werent bright enough for me so I sold them. I prefer the ccfl gen 3's because they look more oem. these are ok, but if your going to get projectors I think everyone will recommend gen 3's. But its your Jeep so if you like these go for it

Not a problem! Glad to help!

Also in regards to you saying you were thinking about the dark housings and tinted tails, do it! Join us on the dark side!!! We have candy

HAHAHAHHAHAH...you guys are a friggin riot.

#1...they look awesome! Enjoy the hell out of em brotha!
#2...I've been working on using the power of my mind to de-amber bulbs for fellow jeepers. My hatred of the color causes it to flake and fall off the bulb into oblivion where it belongs.
#3...Cheap...those are Gen 2's you posted pics of. I had those awhile back as our buddy Platinum said. They are a good fixture, but the Gen 3 is where it's at as far as looks...at least that's my opinion. The second they arrive, let me know and I'll walk you though baking them in the oven to pull the lens off so you can remove that gawd-awful amber lens, okay?

#17 ·
You and your anti-amber, haha. Thanks, I definitely enjoy the way these things look! Reinforced what I knew about LED's on the first side I worked on (wiring the side bulbs) they do NOT work with polarity reversed.:slapfight:

Thanks Dave, you should definitely get a set of Gen3s! Easy enough to hook up and they look great. Hell, I woulda settled for stock replacements that just werent so hazed over if I had never found this site. The hids were even easier to hook up, I would definitely recommend XenonDepot, and they give us a forum discount too.

Oh, and I believe Dave is under a state of emergency right now...while my crappy state remains dry and snow free...so far.

#33 ·
Thanks for the concern bro. We didn't end up with as much as they were calling for cause it warmed up above freezing during the day but man did that stuff wipe out the trees. It was like Baja driving to work yesterday morning. Tested out the lift a little when I couldn't get around a few smaller ones so I went over them:thumbsup: That's why the state of emergency to probably get line crew help to restore power not any snow concerns. We were lucky ours was only out for six hours. Many were lucky if they got theirs back today. Snow's all but gone around here today but I got some "manscaping" to do and it cost me $8 at the car wash to get that damn salt off the Jeepie.

Thanks Scott!

:eek:HOLY BALLS are these HIDs bright at night! I was super impressed with them last night driving home, but I think I need to revisit aiming, they seem to be up kinda high, I probably blinded everyone going the opposite direction :slapfight:

I bought mine off an ebay store. To find them, my exact search phrase was '99-04 grand cherokee ccfl projector' and then I sort by lowest price first. Here is a link to ones like mine linky

For those that have the gen3's already, any tips on adjusting them? I read the article on wjjeeps.com, just wondering about that adjustment knob on the back of the new housings.

#27 ·
Adjusting them is not easy like the stock housings. There's a knob with teeth on the back, you'll have to loosen the screw going through the middle of it and turn the knob to the left to lower the beam and right to raise the beam if I remember correctly. When you think you have it good, put the housings in their spot, park 25 feet or so in front of your garage and check them. Make adjustments if necessary and then tighten the screw again and no more blinding people!

Your setup looks great man! I wish I had gone CCFL.

Thanks for the info! I will be trying this tonight, wish me luck!

#30 ·
I got a cheap long-handled screwdriver and ground the blade down on it so that I could adjust them more easily. The adjusters are in a terrible location....plus you need to turn it a gazillion times to get it to lower a little.

#31 ·
Good to know, thanks, I will plan plenty of time to do this tonight after work.

#35 ·
2012....you'd think someone would have invented a non-corrosive solution to friggin snow.

#38 ·
Actually, there are supposedly de-icing chemicals that have little to no corrosive effects. Problem is they are too expensive for any DOT to want to buy it. I read an article where some delivery companies are tying to petition for using these to help save maintenance costs on their trucks. I can't believe the salt doesn't turn the plows into a pile of scrap rust every season.

#37 ·
...and I swear it leaves a greasy film on your windshield that just WON'T come off without a good washing.

#41 ·
NO!!! Not the amber! :lol::D:slapfight:
