Auxilary Gauge Mounting Locations

So, on the later WJ's the grab handle gets in the way of mounting a gauge pod on the pillar and I am looking around the dash for mounting locations and see this place and think that it's possible to mount a 2 & 1/16 gauge in this place behind the tilt wheel control:

Removed this piece which is held in place by four friction clips and found this:

The space behind the panel looks like this:

I am thinking about making a cardboard mock-up of this piece and taking it one step further. I have considered one on the other side but the power pedal controls are located there. This one will be the transmission temp gauge. I will likely use a gauge pod mounted at the base of the a-pillar for the oil pressure gauge. Oil pressure is more important to watch.

I hope to try the mock-up this afternoon. I don't have the gauge but can work on the template.

I have not given up on this. PML pan tapped for the temp sensor is installed giving me more motivation to dive into this.

This is the view from the wheel which is what first gave me the idea...

That is exactly why I shared it on the forum - I like to mess with peoples heads. I would consider the same on the other sided but don't want to mess with the power pedal controls.

What about individual pods and mounting them on dash? Kind of.like wrx/sti setup.

Too much flash for me. I like to keep things subtle and out of the way. Maybe that is cause I am getting old.... :slapfight:

there is always that other option and unscrew the grab handle on the A pillar. i don't even think there was a time that i have ever touched the grab handle at least on the drivers side. i don't think it will be an issue for the air bags either since those are above.

True and I had not considered it. That option does mess with the interior design more than I desire. I am also trying to do things that are easily reversed should I decide to trade it - not that I would do that as I have desired a Columbia Edition WJ since they were released in 2003.

how about a nice bezel on top of the steering column cover plastic piece off set from the hazard button.Use a 52mm gauge housed in the bezel. I like your idea as well.
It would be a neat carbon fiber project 2 gauges on that piece that you where thinking about using. You could also mount some rocker/toggle switches in that area if you need as well.

thanks for the input. Still not done with this.

If it is a big demand and people like the idea I could make a complete piece out of carbon fiber with angled bezels built in to it. One on each side maybe both angled in. Still leaves room to mount any rocker switches. I don't see myself putting in gauges in my jeep but im sure others out there would like it.

Im sure I can make a carbon fiber only replacement part. NO fiberglass will be used maybe under $200 is what I would shoot for. I have all the stuff here to make it. Once I can figure material cost and what it take for me to make one that price would change hopefully for the better. It would be a well done piece. I just took some pics of the stock unit. I will put up my idea and see about the input. I just found a a/f meter laying around so I guess I have no excuse but to put it in. Its an Autometer pro comp so hell why not. This also leave me a place for foglights/driving lights/ or if i ever put on roof rack lights. IF ANY ONE HAS one of these laying around I will BUY it off them so I can make a mold. I would like to keep my stock pieces intact. So i can make sure the fitiment is pristine. I may also toy with the idea of a steering column pod. I have never cared for A pillar gauges no offense to anyone who has got them. But i think a gauge housing/steering column pod would look sleeper/clean/updated/sleek looking. So seriously does this sound like a really cool idea or what? I will be posting up some pics soon of this current mild build of my Jeep. It will have a lot of carbon fiber goodies that I am making as well with a hydrographic company I am working with.

PM ME IF ANYONE HAS A SPARE we can go from there.

This is what I came up with for a pair of gauges. Not a big fan of the pillar mounts either. I'm not worried about a perfect view of them as they have adjustable warnings built in. Now that I've seen those Autometer angles I'll stop mucking around with making some. Will possibly look at spinning the gauges around like they often do on race bikes etc where they orientate them with the needle ending correctly visible at the important part of the scale.

Frester, I was eyeing that space for one or both of the aux gauges. I do like to toss my wallet in there on long trips. Thanks for the pics.

Sorry guys been away. I glassed and bogged (bondo??) a standard ashtray panel after taking out the ashtray door. Also cut away part of the rear to clear the gauges but left enough to retain strength. Then covered in brushed titanium 3M film. Not a fan of the woodgrain and the carbon is a bit over the top for me so I'm covering all my woodgrain features with the titanium so this hides the work on the ashtray nicely too.

It's not the best view in the world there I know but I prefer things to look as factory as possible and with the tapered rings view would be better and the gauges both have programmable warning triggers which is easy to see. Also went with the custom Mopar gauge face again to make it look more like a factory option/accessory fitment. Night glow on the gauges is also pale green like the instruments.
Swithces are for :spotlight, front light bar, rear light bar, air compressor, front locker, dual battery start override, and reversing camera changeover (tailgate & van)

Just to follow up on this. I am going to pull the trigger on the trans temp gauge and mount it in the cubby hole below the heat/AC controls and then mount the oil pressure gauge in the location at the beginning of the thread. I want the oil pressure gauge more readily in my line of sight. Trans temp is not as important since I am not towing things on a regular basis.

I am going to use this mount and put it in the cubby hole in the dash below the heater/ac controls
Auto Meter 2236 Black Aluminum Gauge Panel : Amazon.com : Automotive

I am going to use these to angle it so it is easier to see from the driver's seat

Here is the original proposed location which will hold the oil pressure gauge when I save up for it.

Gee... can't ya give a guy a break? :D I have moved and started a new job in the past two months... living in temporary housing and working on buying a house. :eek:hsnap:

Ordered from Amazon and should be here in a week. I think this install should be very easy.

Good luck with the new job man! Yeah it should be a straight forward install. It will look nice with the gauges under the ac/heater controls. I still want to see the gauge mount on the lower piece under the cluster. If you need a spare piece I have one in my junk pile I can send you. Just pm me!
