I took another look at the contacts at the bulb "and" the contacts in the lens assembly. What I found was that the ground tab in the lens was not in the same plane as the 2 contacts for the filaments.

I dug under the edge of the tab & bent it up......low and behold, everything works as it should now.....

So, it wasn't the bulb socket that wasn't making good contact, it was the the lens contacts.....

If you had red my post from the 21st, i had already mentioned that. I had the same problem, with the right brake light only. Bending the copper colored tab did do the trick, but for a few days only. I also bend the metal plates in the light assy and the problem was solved.
