Bumpers

What is available in the way of non stock badass looking.bumpers for the wj platform? My '02 laredo has a ding in it and I'm looking to replace it. I will never do any real wheeling but like the look. I plan on a 2" bb lift (or maybe a 2.5" ome...if I can sneak it past the CFO), bushwhacker flares,a safari rack and maybe doing a rear bumper with tire carrier. I love the look but don't ever see myself actually offroading other than pulling in to the camp site...are there any options or am I going to have to become a much better welded than I currently am and do it myself ? Ultimately the look I'm after is the wj on the buswhacker site showing off the flares. Thanks in advance.

Re: Bumpers

I've read some things about fenders and flares but I'm not an expert by any means.

It's gonna depend on how much you wanna drop on it. This website basically gives you all of your possibilities.

WJBumpers

If you don't wanna drop that type of money, then its gonna be a DIY or hopefully you'll get lucky and someone near one will piece one out (highly unlikely but all a possibility). I know I can go down to Mexico with a picture and get one built for about $400. I'd imagine it would be even cheaper if you did it yourself.

For the flares, I've only seen them on one WJ and that's because you have to cut the metal on the panels. It sort of pushes people away from attempting that job.

Thanks for the input ! I've come to the conclusion that I will probably be a DIY guy ...at almost $1000 for a real "safari" bumper I don't think that's going to happen ...I have an idea for flares that if works I may actually consider marketing

That's what I thought too... ARB is like $900 + shipping that's what set me looking for alternatives...the one on the buswhacker WJ is even more expensive ! I have a friend that runs a truck shop and can score some stainless semi bumpers for materials I just have to invest in a good welder and practice ...

Now thinking about this bumper project and wondering ...will changing the front bumper to a steel non dampened have an effect on air bags ?

Re: Bumpers

I don't believe so. Air bags are controlled by a computer that monitors a bunch of sensors in the car (acceleromators, impact sensors, door sensors, etc). I can't think of a reason why changing the front bumper would affect the air bag computer.

It might not I guess but I've heard horror stories of other vehicles where air bags were set off removing the bumper cover... just nervous...still gonna go for it

Re: Bumpers

The bumper cover? Probably hit a sensor or something that activated air bag deployment.

Re: Bumpers

Just unhook the battery before working on it and air bags should be ok. I'm not sure where the sensors are on these but some cars have them in front. Not hooked to the bumber but in the front. Usually have orange connectors that are complicated to get apart, stay away from those. Other wise don't worry about it too much.
