Electric folding door mirror.

Hi folks,

Year 2000 WJ 4.0L (U.K. vehicle but built in U.S.) electrically folding passenger side door mirror folds inwards ok but when the button is pressed to unfold the door mirrors the passenger side one moves a tiny amount then stops and makes a clicking sound then stops and stays where it is, the drivers' side is fine, I have to pull out the passenger one manually,it sounds like there may be some cogs internally that are not engaging properly or something, my question is have any of you guys experienced this problem and how did you go about repairing it, if indeed you can? Or will it be a case of replacing the whole unit do you think? Thanks ever so much,

Jim.

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

I agree it sounds like a cog is misaligned or partially stripped. I don't know if the cog is serviced separately however, so a call to your parts dept. may be in order. If not serviced separately you may attempt a tear down to see if a bolt is loose or if you can sort it with some good old shade tree engineering. A breaker yard may have a good mirror that could save you a few quid. Wheeler Dealers on the telly said there are quite a few Jeep parts specialists in the UK. If you can locate the episode you may find where they sourced their parts. Best of luck.

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Hi Governor,

That's helpful, thank you, I've been scanning Ebay just out of interest and there are plenty of XJ mirrors or later model WJ mirrors averaging around 50-60, some cheaper, fully working in reasonable condition but none for mine at the moment, secondhand prices seem pretty reasonable actually so as you say a phone around the breakers may be fruitful.
I love your saying 'old shade tree engineering'! Smashing! That's my kind of thing, bless you! I think if I can locate one then I may strip my one down just out of interest to see if they are serviceable, if so then i'll have a spare! I will keep this thread informed, many thanks.

I may have a look on catch up tv to try and track down that episode! Ta!

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Hi folks! Good news, found a Jeep folding door mirror repair kit on Ebay! (UK) Consisting of a set of replacement metal cogs! There's even pictures of how to go about the job, probably not original equipment but if they do the job i'll be happy , came to 46 including postage, there's 2 different gear sets for my model so I presume one set is for the glass tilt mechanism and the other set for the actual folding mechanism.......I've ordered both sets in readiness for a complete strip down and re-build of the whole unit internally, it'll be fun under that shady tree i'm sure! Keep you posted, ta!

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Hi folks, replacement gear sets arrived the other day, I believe one set is for the folding mechanism and the other two which seem to be identical must be for the glass tilt mechanism i'm presuming, will know more on a strip down of the mirror unit, will update when I get a chance to, best wishes.

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Good to know that they sell those parts separately. Success with the repair and let us know how it worked out.

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Hi folks, got a few days off work coming up soon so hope to tackle this job very soon.......as long as the Missus doesn't keep finding me jobs around the house I hope to be able to escape to the man cave on at least one of those days! See what happens......

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Hi folks! Finally got around to sorting out the door mirror folding mechanism, it was quite fiddly and took a while to work out how the unit comes apart once removed from the car but we got there in the end, no need to completely remove the door card just partially unclip and unscrew the front part so it can be gently pulled away from the door to gain access to the three nuts and unclip the wiring harness:

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

After removing the whole unit it was a case of finding out how to get inside, on the underside of the unit there is a round plastic cover that unclipped revealing 4 Philips head screws:

Re: Electric folding door mirror.

Removing these screws enabled me to carefully separate the actual mirror unit from the holder:
