Engine Cleaning Tips?

Hey everyone! So I'm looking to clean up the engine bay a little bit on my 2001 Grand Cherokee. I don't think it's ever been cleaned before.

I've never cleaned an engine bay, but I've been looking up information about how to do it. From what I can tell, it's okay to hose the engine down with (low-pressure) water, but just stay away from directly spraying electrical components.

So far, I've got a couple of questions:
  1. Is there anything specific in the engine bay (electrical, etc.) that I need to cover-up to avoid water damage? Fuses, battery, alternator, etc.
  2. I already purchased some brushes a bottle of 303 Aerospace Protectant to shine everything up. Can anyone recommend a good degreaser to use to loosen up all the grime and dirt? I was thinking of going with this Detailer's Pro Engine Degreaser, but it's kind of pricey.
  3. Does anyone have any tips in general about cleaning an engine bay?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Engine Cleaning Tips?

Hi, bought a wj gc overland July this year. with the engine off give everything a good squirt of degreaser, make sure the alternator has a plastic bag over it, same for the ecu and fuse board, all connectors probs be OK has long as you don't get to close with the jet wash. coil if petrol model same caution apply's. I gave every where a good spray of wd40 after drying, made everything nice and shiny again too. Get in all the nooks and crannys to shift all those years of built up muck. Don't forget to apply grease to all catches, hinge points and bonnet pull cable spring assembly. :-) have fun.
