Interior lights come on randomly while driving

Not sure where to post this but this seems to be the interior section so here goes, Got a 2000 JGC laredo. Sometimes while driving the interior lights with just come on randomly. They eventually go back off but it's annoying, I have checked the wires in the door jam and they are in great shape. There are not any door switches so does that mean that the door open sensor is in the door latch?? The overhead console always works right if a door is open but when the lights come on the overhead console says nothing so it doesn't seem like a door latch problem but I may be wrong. Anybody else have this issue with a WJ? I have have some issues with the wife's 04 JGC but it wound up being the door jam wiring on her jeep but the wiring on the 2000 looks perfect. I unplugged it at the door and followed the wiring all the way into the kick panel and it all looked great. I have a FSM for a 2000 JGC but still do not know where to start because it doesn't happen but every once in awhile. Thanks Chad

Re: Interior lights come on randomly while driving

Yes, the door switches are inside the door latches. If a door switch gives a momentary door open signal, the BCM will switch on the interior lights and keep them on for a preset time. If this momentary signal is very short, the EVIC will not show a door open, but the BCM will still switch the lights on. Finding the faulty switch is not that easy, you probably will have to disconnect one at a time and drive to see if the problem is fixed. I would start with the door which is used the most. The problem can also be a shaved wire isolation, which makes contact to ground once in a while.

Re: Interior lights come on randomly while driving

Thanks for the reply, it's my daughter's jeep and she is off at college at the moment. It's kind of hard to check it out good when she is usually gone in it. I did check the door jam wiring good last time she was home and it looked good. I didn't see any of the wires that looked like they were trying pull apart. The driver's door is the most used one so I am thinking of replacing that one and see if that will take care of the problem. It doesn't do it very often but it's annoying when it does. Gotta love these jeep's and their little quirk's!!!

Re: Interior lights come on randomly while driving

Got an update on the lighting issue. My daughter called me and said that the overhead console kept saying that the passenger side door was open but it was closed. It finally re-set itself and went off I guess but when she came home I had planned to replace the passenger side door lock module but decided to check the wiring in the door jamb just to get a look at it and there it was!! Black wire was broken into and just sticking up. Repaired wire and everything seem's to be working good now. Hopefully that will take care of that issue for awhile.....

Me too!! It bug's me when I got a problem like that and can't figure it out. I'm not all that great when it come's to electrical issues but i'm getting better at it a little bit at a time. I got 2 WJ's that are mine and my daughter has one and both my nieces have WJ's so I am covered up in jeep's so I have to know a little bit about them at least.
