So I took off the roof rack the other day and im in love with it. I plugged all the holes with some Christmas tree clips and silicone. But i want to lay a new rubber strip along the side to make it look nicer. Anyone have any idea where to get some rubber strips? Its almost 1" wide.
Yeah buddy...I had a hard time with it, but once I got used to the nice, clean look, I love it too. No leaks either, and I did the same thing you did.
Are you talking about laying rubber inside the "gutter" channel? Check out some industrial supply places like mcmaster.com or grainger.com. I spent quite a bit of time cleaning the goop off of mine when I was done removing the supports. I was contemplating doing a black stripe in each gutter too, but decided against it. You might look for thick black pinstriping?
I found a website. Rubber Sheet and Rubber Roll | RubberSheetRoll, RSR Co I think I'm going to order some from there. You can order it with adhesive already on it. The WJ looks so much better without the roof rack! One mod I'm glad I did.
I placed my order with the web site i stated earlier. Total came to $57 for 1" wide, 3/8" thick by 16' long roll with adhesive already applied. Not to expensive. The channel depth is about 1/2" but i wanted to leave some there just for looks. I should have it in about a week so ill post some before and after pics of it.
In for pics. I'm debating to do the same. I already have my cross bars off. I just want to take the rack off but dont want to leave it expose to rain and etc.
Just use some small Christmas tree clips with a little silicon on them. That's how i sealed them and once it warms up here ill be laying down a strip of new rubber in the channel where the rack used to sit.
You can also use the same stuff I used in the "gutter"...found it on ebay, but also saw that my local Autozone carries it. It's got 3m adhesive on the back and is just a little narrower than the gutter.
I looked for wider stuff, but nothing was out there. I forget how much I ordered...I want to say it was like 15 feet to do the whole thing, but make sure you measure first. I'm not sure if the rolls at Autozone are long enough to do one entire gutter or not. I got mine on ebay and just asked the seller to make sure the lenghts were long enough after I took measurements.
Yeah not a big fan of the gap. Would look awesome if the gap wasnt there. Im just laying down rubber that is like a 1/16 smaller than the gutter and might throw some carbon fiber wrap that i have left on it.
I'm just trying to make it look close to factory. I remember coming across one wj local here that doesnt have the rack on the roof. The guy looks like in his 50's and I asked him if he took it off. He said no, I never had one when I bought it new. So, it was an option?
I found some perfect stuff at pep boys the other day. It's 1 inch wide and fits in the gutter channel perfect. Ill snap some pics tomorrow. I saved the box and ill take a pic of it. Too. It was 20 bucks for the package and it did both channels with a foot or 2 leftover.
