Roof rack rails

I'm going to be taking the roof rack rails off my wj... Is there adhesive under them or just the six bolts?

Re: Roof rack rails

On my '01 Limited it's just the bolts with grease under the pads

Re: Roof rack rails

There is adhesive on the front part of the assembly where it meets the windshield, but nothing difficult. Just double-sided tape if I remember correctly. Mine came clean with some goo-gone and elbow grease. I then installed some carbon-fiber trim in the "gutter" to make it look clean.

Re: Roof rack rails

I finally did it today. I didn't know it was 10 bolts, I was surprised. I used 1" body moulding for the gap and for now, just filled the holes with silicone. The adhesive at the front ( you were correct, it's tape) came off fairly easily. Now I have to do something with the stains where the roof rack mounts were. I'm thinking some Meguiers ultimate compound.. Any thoughts?

Re: Roof rack rails

Yes sir...wash the Jeep well, check for leaks inside, and hit the stains with a claybar and plenty of lube. You don't want any chaffing. After that, it's Ultimate Compound time, then at least wax.

Autozone or any decent auto parts store will have it, as well as the plastic push-in fasteners to fully cover those captive nuts so water doesn't get in. They are cheap, make it look finished, and cheap insurance.
