I know this is an exhaustive question but I'm still having trouble and thought I'd would ask for myself-and more directly than some others have.
I have a 2002 WJ Overland. I want a brush guard like crazy, however I would also like to keep my front tow hooks in place. I know this is a tough question as most require them to be removed.
The only one off hand I can think of is the Mopar style grill guard, which apparently is nowhere to be found. If anybody has a link to where I could get one I would really appreciate it.
Otherwise if there is something else out there that lets me keep my front hooks I'm all ears!
Thanks:thumbsup:!
hopefully someone will chime in with the manufacturer name. But I have seen ones that mount below the bumper which allow the tow hooks to remain in place. And also the safari bars mount underneath also, if you were interested in those.
I do like the safari bar, but its just not for me out here in deer country.
In the past the brush guard I had on my XJ saved the vehicle from some pretty violent hits. That was a WAAG brush guard, but still requires me to remove the hooks in front.
Is there anyone out there who has gotten away with putting the brush guard on and still mounting the hooks on too (maybe just facing differently)? I've asked on other forums too but even with the large amount of WJ owners out there no luck. Just waiting for that person to chime in who has done it or knows where to get one.
I have a Westin brush guard on my laredo. I didn't have tow hooks to worry about, but i do help recover people fairly often. i just loop the rope through the bottom bar on the brush guard and its strong enough to do whats needed. I've never had anything shift on me or any problems with it.
Just a thought.
that good to know, i know the mounts are strong as hell and its with good hardwear.my jeep has bottomed out on a few pot holes and my westing bar mounts have taken the hit and nothing to show but some surfaces rust. if i did not have it on am sure my front bumper would be busted
Cool. The Westin one must be tougher than my Waag one then, because I have gotten stuck in my XJ (w/the Waag guard) and in pulling me out we tied a rope around the bottom bar. All it did though was bend the bar by pulling it out. Luckily we caught it early enough to not notice unless you stop and look at it for a minute.
Then again maybe it was because we went around the middle of the bar?
Ok, so I found one. Looks like a UK company. Don't know if anyone knows anything about them. But this is basically what I'm looking for.
Otherwise, I have also thought of a bull bar, because many do not require me to remove the front tow hooks. I would want a tall one like the one pictured in the link. If anyone knows an American-based company that does it please let me know!

Hmmm...thanks for the info so far guys! I email them and asked why it would only fit an '04 so I'll let you know what they say. I really love the front hooks so there has to be something out there for me. Heck, are the stock hooks even a decent recovery point or no? If not then that may change the story here a bit.
If the stock hooks are useless I may have to make a thread asking for pics of brush guards and push bars because removing them wouldn't matter anyways.
so nothing is always as good as it seems, and it seems i tried my luck too many times with the rope on the bottom bar. My grill guard is still one piece, but the bar isn't as straight as it once was. got a call last night, buddy high-centered his tahoe on a small boulder. i got the boulder out of the way, but he had already dug himself deep enough that his rear axle was sitting in the dirt. bent my bar and tarnished my recovery record, guess its time to get some proper gear
Yeah, I have done the same with my old XJ. Saved it from a deer twice, but no good for recovery. This is why this is such a hard find because I really don't want to get an entirely new bumper...has to be a solution out there.
i know the thought might seem obvious, but i don't have tow hooks or an overland. is there something preventing you from getting the regular grill guard and just buying longer in order to keep the hooks?
Lol. So far I simply cannot find a grill guard that lets me keep the front hooks. It seems that it is either one or the other. Not interested in aftermarket bumpers either, which makes the search a tough one.
The only ones I can find that do are push bars that don't even reach as high as the grille itself-which defeats the purpose of one in my mind.
However, if you do know of a brush guard or grille guard that lets me keep them I'm all ears.
I've seen a couple guys buy after market hooks and bolt them to bottom of grill guard and then weld them too,but if you do this i would recommend only doing straight pulls and not at an angle, wont be as strong as factory hook setup (I dont think) but they dont seem to have any problems with this setup so far.Years and years ago i did samething on my 77 chevy 4x4 pickup with no issues and abused them but that was a solid frame not a unibody
