WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

OK, So as everyone knows the holidays are coming up. Which means more time/money for upgrades. As many know I am very performance oriented, but I would like to improve other aspects of my WJ.

Because of my job I do alot of driving at night...and I've always felt like the WJ OEM lighting was kind of sub-par. This is especially apparent after driving other vehicles with OEM HIDs. I ran Silverstars at one point, and that did improve things a bit , but one burnt out after 6 months so I put stock low beams back in. That, combined with the FL sun creating clouding in my OEM housings, is prompting me to look into upgraded lighting options.

I've always known about the Ebay Projector housings. But never looked too seriously into them. The original ones have always looked kinda ricey to me...and I believe about 2 years ago they came out with a new version that eliminated most of that sh*t.

I believe these lights can take the factory style bulbs (9006s?) for vastly improved, yet still halogen-powered output. I would eventually like HIDs, but I am OK with improved halogen output.

So how are these housings? Are they cheap chinky sh*t? Or are they high quality that I can expect to last? Are they a truly bolt-in deal?

Re: WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

Ryan,

The GEN III housings are really nice. High quality and I would say a pretty solid built. They snap right into the stock locations, and uses the same bulbs as the stock headlamps. 9005 for high beams, and 9006 for low beams.

I like them as far as looks go. They are very, very OEM looking. The only thing that I didn't really like about them was that the light output seems to be kind of "limited". It has an awesome cut off for halogen projectors, and a nice color flare, but to be it seemed like the didn't have enough light projecting out toward the sides. May be I just didn't have them aimed high enough. I dunno. But here here some pix for you showing the light output. You can decide for yourself!

If mine didn't fog up (not moisture)...then I probably would still be running them.

Re: WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

I'm thinking of doing this MOD. Still tempting.

And get Gen III. Mon has them and you can see them in his Sig.

Re: WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

Hannes,

EXCELLENT reply. Thanks again. BTW, I've been on those roads!

I have heard others complain about the narrow output. I have seen others fix that with a set of IIRC Acura TSX projectors. I am more concerned with seeing further rather than "farther" ( i.e. what's straight ahead vs what's in my peripheral vision), so as long as the peripheral light output is close to OEM it's acceptable to me.

Why did yours fog up again? I know you've told me before, but I don't recall the specifics. I would like this to be a "set it and forget it" modification, i.e. I don't want to have to take apart the housings in 6 months because moisture is somehow getting in on its own.

Re: WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

You're welcome Ryan!! Anytime!

I think you would be happy with them. I honestly think I just didn't have mine aimed up far enough. It will be a set it and forget it mod. Just remember to transfer the headlight vent tubes from your stock headlights over the projectors. They come with caps, but they need vents, otherwise they might draw some moisture in.

Yeah..you can swap in a set of TSX projectors, but that's some surgery. You have to take it apart, and secure the TSX projector in there somehow, because it doesn't mount the same way as the Sonar Halogen Projector. And you'll need some DS1 HID bulbs for sure with the TSX's.

Mine fogged up because of the paint I used. I guess the paint and the heat from the light wasn't compatible, so when the lights were on, they were kind of vaporizing the paint, causing a foggy film to collect on the inside of the lens. I opened them up again, cleaned them, but they did it even worse the 2nd time. So they ended up in the dumpster. They couldn't be saved...

Re: WJ Projector Housings. Please help.

As long as the peripheral light output is marginal, and they don't fog up, I think I'll be happy with them too. I would prefer to not mess with swapping aftermarket projectors into them. If I wanted to do that I think I would just get a cheapo set of OEM housings to hack up.

One last question....black housings, or chrome?
