WJ reverse camera? 206WJ help, I know you have one!

Hey guys, I have a bypassed Pioneer D106 and I was just wondering what kind of backup camera I could run. I looked at pioneers site and they want me to buy a $300 backup camera, do I have to use the pioneer one or will any backup camera work? I want the kind that replaces my rear license plate frame so its sort of stealth. Running the wire will be a pain in the ass and that I'm sure of! I know for a fact I'll be tearing up the entire right side of my wj, no problem though I've done it before! If anyone can give me some pointers (cough 206wj) on how to do the install much appreciated! I'm thinking drill a small hole, and a grommet and some silicone near where my license plate lights are?

Re: WJ reverse camera? 206WJ help, I know you have one!

I'll take some pics for you tomorrow. I did it without any holes drilled. You just have to take off all of the plastic trim on the rear hatch itself, and run the Video wire up the A pillar then along the roof edge on the right side. It's pretty esay to run the wire, you have to pull off the top of the door seals all the way down, tuck the wire in, then put the seals back in.

From there you can pull off the top trip piece and use a wire snake of some kind to pull the wires into the hatch through the rubber weather proctor that has other wires going to it into the hatch. Then slide the wires into place.

It's much easier than it sounds.

As far as camera's go, it's really up to what you want. They all have a power, ground, and an RCA out.

Damn this is a thread I need to watch. I have the Pioneer AVH-5100 and want a rear view camera but don't know which and where to mount it.

Ok cool I'm pretty comfortable tearing apart the interior, been there done that so that will just take time and patience more than anything else.

How did you physically get the camera wire to the inside of the wj? I want to run a license plate bracket style so it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb!

Apparently I'm supposed to tap into the reverse light for a power on/off for the camera, which will automatically trigger the headunit to show me my backup camera. A shop wants $400 installed for it! Absolutely ludicrous, I'm sure I can find the camera for around $150 and install it in one day. I'm thinking of doing reverse HID's along with license plate LED's to give me some extra illumination

Open your hatch. Look to the top a little to the left, and you'll see the rubber weather proctector for the wires that are already on the hatch. You just fish them through there.

Yep. That's how you hook it up. just use a good ground. If you're going to add hid's too make sure you put relay's. The way I have mine is different though. Sometimes I like to switch my screen so it's on the camera while I'm driving. You can't do that with the camera connected to the backup wire. I just ran a long lead from the switched radio power to a relay for my camera.

Ok I kinda follow I know the protector for the wires already there I was already figuring I had to deal with that (and im sure it'll be a pita) but I was more wondering how to get the wires from the outside to inside the hatch, like the wires from the camera itself on the exterior to the interior, help?

It's pretty easy once you get the pannel off from the rear hatch, and the pannel on the outside where the bulbs are for the license plate lights. That one is only 2 screws. I just snuck it through between that exterior cover and the hatch. I'll have to take some pict to explain it better.

Yeah, I suck at picture too, that's why I have to go back and take pictures every time someone asks me how I did something.

Sweet thanks, what kind of camera did you use btw? I really hope I don't need some proprietary crap because honestly shelling out $200 for a backup camera seems like a rip.

I use a poineer now. Just because I wanted to see the difference.

I used to use this http://www.google.com/products/catal...476&sa=title#p and It was great!! But I was in some -4 temps and my friend threw water on it, so the lens cover cracked. The only time it wasn't a great picture is in low light conditions. That was before my 3 extra backup lights though.

I have my backup camera in my trailer hitch I ran the wires same as your being told here.,,no drilling. I also have it setup so I can switch to it instead of with the reverse lights.
