I have a 1999 G/C with a 4.0 in it with Dana35 Differentials with 3.55 rear ratio the rear one is toast ,I have acquired a 2001 G/C Limited with a 4.7 and Dana 44 rearend with 3.73 gear ratio , I want to swap out the existing and replace withthe Dana 44's. What problems will I encounter, and what drivelines do I need to use, the ones currently in the jeep (4.0) or the ones coming from the donner with the (4.7) ?
Thanks, Skip
This swap will not work. The different gear ratios will be the problem and something will break when 4x4 is used. Also think that the different ratio (if you would use the same for front and rear), would increase the engine rpm and lower mpg.
Thanks for the info ,what I had in mind was swapping out both the front and the rear complete axil assemblies with the parts off of the salvaged 2001,I ,m really not worried about MPG this is just going to be used for a backup vehicle in the winter.I just need to know if they will be a remove and install, or will I run into a bunch of fabrications to make it work.
Thanks Skip
Never tried this myself, so can´t tell you anything from my experience. But i think it will be a simple remove and install thing. Maybe anyone on here already tried this and can tell.
Just browsing old posts and ran across this. I did this swap on my 99 GC Laredo 4.0 with 3.55 axles. Put in front & rear 3.73 vari-locs. Strictly bolt in. Milage still averages 19. Hope this maybe helps someone.
I would put the Dana 44 axle in . its a much stronger axle .the gearing isnt a huge difference . But before you do . acquire a new gear set for the front axle matching rear , and replace all at once .Setting the ring and pinion backlash is a science . So have a professional install it .Depending on your personal needs . It might not be worth expence ?
