Gentlemen,

One of the things that has never quite settled well with me regarding the WJ Jeep is the rear-end shimmy from side to side. And as with anything that wears, as time has gone on so has the Jeep suspension.

I have changed every suspension part on the WJ within the last 3-years and it restored some of the original ride qualities. I have replaced each of the control arms with stronger aftermarket units that have more substantial bushings in them. Of course this will reduce some of the suspension articulation in off-road situations.

One of the many items I also replaced was the upper rear A-arm and ball-joint. Well, after just three short years the bushings in the rear A-arm are shot! The shimmy has returned in it's annoying fashion and I could not take it anymore.

So, I sprung for an aftermarket unit from Rusty's Off Road. Of course there are Pros & Cons, I am sure. But after having installed the unit the rear ride is more solid than ever before. The suspension now has so little deflection that I can actually see deflection in the sidewall of the 20" tires. The rear now feels European car solid... I like that!

I will update with driving impressions as I get some miles on the unit. Also, I will be installing a new set of Bilstein HD shocks with it once Kolak gets them to me... I will also share some of my concerns with you guys that are interested as we go along...

Gonna be installing a Rough Country long arm kit with a tri link like that. Hoping to have similar results!

CheapJeep,

I don't know about several of the other Tri-links on the market, but the Rusty's unit has been lengthened over OEM length. The center on the third link is centered over the rear of the diff and diff cover...

Yep Carlos the A arm as well as the lowers are adjustable so I can center the axle in the wheel well and get a good pinion angle. Hopefully since both fronts are also adjustable I can correct my caster too.

Gentlemen,

Well, after putting a few miles on the Jeep after the Tri-Link installation, I am happy with the handling! The Jeep now has a more stable/secure ride quality in the rear and the shimmy is gone. Of course some of the Jeep ride characteristics remain the same. Now, does the difference in ride quality justify spending nearly $500 for an aftermarket part? Depends on what you like! I tend more towards the performance car side of things, so I am okay with it. For others though, a quality set of bushings may do the trick just as well...

As for the Bilstein HD shocks, I like them so far! Initially they did not feel as stiff as the 2-year-old Ranch shocks that I removed and they felt under dampened. But after putting a few miles on them I believe that the valving/dampening is just about right for an over the road vehicle.

Now if I can just get the front end up to par with the rear it will be lovely..

Due to the extremely high costs to get a complete A-arm overhere, i was thinking in making a link like this myself, or let some company make it for me. I was only wondering if the ball ends will not propagate a lot of the road noise to the frame and into the interior? With the original design the rubber bushings would absorb a lot of the noise at least.

Frank,

I understand your concerns about road noise, but I have not experienced any noticeable increase in road noise. The Flex-Joint race is designed from Delrin billet, so it has some dampening qualities. If you would like greater dampening however, you can utilize a rubber joint in its place (as seen below)...

I am slightly concerned about the Heim joints getting sloppy and noisy as they wear, but right now they are guiet and seamless...

As for building a custom arm yourself, it would not be very difficult with the proper tools, material, and a savy fabricator!

Thanks Carlos. For now ive ordered 2 more bushings, from Dorman this time. The first set, from Omix-ada, lasted less then 1000 Km. If i would buy the complete arm, i would have to pay more then twice the costs of the arm for shipping and then another 60% over the total for tax.
If the Dorman bushings wont last, i will go for a locally made tri-link.
