Lift and drivetrain question

Hey all-

So my CV joint just kaput with 139k miles. My Jeep buddy wondered if my 2" lift may have caused extra stress to it. Any ideas?

With normal ride height, the propeller shaft is almost in a straight line with the T-case output. I would think that increasing the height, would increase the angle and will cause more mechanical losses, but the CV joint is designed to transfer the power at an angle. I saw that the rubber boot of your CV joint was broken, which will cause it to wear premature due to dirt ingress and the grease that will go out. But i saw the very small and relatively rigid boot on this CV joint and was wondering if increasing the angle wouldn't damage this boot sooner or later.

I thought the '04s all had the double cardigan joint drive shaft? Mine is all u joints.

That's what Dr. Jeep said! There was no reference to the type I have in his book. Of course, I didn't think I had a Cali Emissions package either since I live in Michigan and bought it brand new here!

Mine is a '04 as well, although European build, but it has the double CV joint setup for the front propeller shaft.

Oh well ya learn something new every day I guess.Well girl you have a few options. First and most desirable is to swap it for a double cardigan style but you have to change one or both yokes depending on what style you have. The t case side isn't bad but the pinion side is a bit more involved. Second rebuild the one you have. CV joints fail all the time with that kind of miles. 2" doesnt create that steep of a driveline angle though I'm sure it helped an already worn CV fail. If you have the double CV like Frank I would change them both and be done.

my front CV joint in my front shaft went out, at factory height, at 147k miles. (it was bad when i bought it)

since i plan on lifting it 4", i will be upgrading to a Rusty's or a Tom Woods Driveshaft. even at stock height, i would have to reccomend this because it may be more expensive in the beginning, but replacing a U Joint is a heck of a lot cheaper than a $185 CV Joint. In my opinion at least.

I changed my CV joint with a Dorman part from Rockauto.com, around 115 USD when i remember well and easy to change.

Thanks everyone. I'm going to look into replacing with the double cardan, Rusty's or Tom Woods. We put the rebuilt one back in and the angle is definitely visible. We measure it at a 5% angle, which doesn't seem like much, but it does make a difference.

Still trying to figure out how I got a Cali Emis. model... LOL.
