Re: "lifter tick? Suuuure"

when we had the head off we replaced the mani gasket and inspected for cracks and the like. so i highly doubt it's a manifold leak. plus wouldn't i hear it much louder right next to the manifold as opposed to the valve/rocker area?

the sound is constant on startup/warmup and only gets louder with rpm

i've gone through a few different and varying oil changes. i don't think that will change it.

the rocker arms are in fact torqued properly.

a month prior to the disassembly i tried an additive

i replaced spark plugs recently and i noticed a little bit more blackening on 5th the spark plug compared to the others, but nothing drastic. the valves all looked good.

what am i missing? oil pump? clogged pushrod?

Re: "lifter tick? Suuuure"

Have you re-torqued the exhaust manifold bolts since you had the gaskets replaced?

If you suspect a leak whether it is in the exhaust, intake or vacuum system you can always get a shop to use the air conditioning smoke dye test. It smokes like crazy and if you don't happen to see or catch all the leaks it leaves a florescent dye that can be seen under a light. If you have a leak it will find it.

Re: "lifter tick? Suuuure"

repair suggestion is pretty much rip out the motor, and replace the cam. if there is substantial damage, new engine block. i thought it was odd as well.

Re: "lifter tick? Suuuure"

Perhaps the "piston slap" that plagues many of the 4.0s once they get some miles???

Re: "lifter tick? Suuuure"

Update. Finally had time to drop the pan. The piston skirt on #2 had broken off. Luckily there is no marring on the block. no indicators of a reason for breakage... shall move on and replace the piston or is there other things i should check for? i'm also replacing the oil pump since it picked up some pieces and wore the insides.
