They went to IFS in 2005, you probably just finally drove one with good shock absorbers.
The factory shocks only last about 60k miles and when replaced with good aftermarket ones improve the ride and handling a lot.
Also the Laredo models came with 225/75/16 tires. When replaced with 245/70/16 tires that were available on the Limited model, the Jeep will hold the road a lot better.

Traded in for a new 2012 4Runner Trail Edition at 218k miles.
