Replaced tie rod end and steering stabilzer

Had a death wobble incident last month after hitting a pot hole while doing 50 mph....scared the shit out of me. Once I got home I checked and found out that there was play on all four tie rods. Soooo, I bought these babies....

After Jacking up the Jeep and removing the tires, first thing I did was to spray PB Blaster on all the nuts and bolts I was going to remove

then remove Cotter pin and castle nut (16mm)

I just used a hammer to loosen up the tie rod by hitting it where it goes thru. A couple of hard banging should do it. Repeat process on ALL four tie rods

Next was the steering stabilizer....

After everything was disconnected, I then clamped it on a table vice so I can turn the tie rod and remove it from the bar. I was using the the wrench for leverage to turn it.

When all four tie rods are off, reverse the process and reinstall.....

Steering linkage ( the hadest one to remove due to tight space )

OEM steering stabilizer looked so tiny compared to the aftermarket one

Dont mind the blue paint tape, I used it as a guide as to how far I can screw in the new tie rods..... Once everything is installed, make sure you get them aligned. I waited till the next day since I was getting all new tires.....

all in all it was about a 2-3 hour job...... next up: Rear axle seals!

Enjoy!

Re: Replaced tie rod end and steering stabilzer

nice write up! i also had the death wobble.. replaced the top 2 tie rods and steering stabilizer also, still need to do the bottom 2. the wobble is gone but there is still a little play in the steering wheel. i desperatly need an alignment too lol hopefully both of those will fix the play
have fun with the rear axle seals... ive done my fronts twice in a year and a half lol

Re: Replaced tie rod end and steering stabilzer

Thanks man, it's been 2 days since I did it. I haven't really tested if it eliminated the DW, but I'm hoping it did..... jeep handles differently with the new stabilizer installed.
Still looking for a place to press my bearings and I should be good.....

Why twice already? I replaced both front hub n axles almost 2 years ago and still doing fine....

Nice work Mon!

Suspension is next on my list and I can't wait to drive it and for it to feel tight and new again.

THANKS!
Got it NAPA... Brand is Monroe. Cost about 42.00 bucks.

Edit: FYI, boot does not come with it, got mine from Advance Auto for 6 bucks.

Thanks Marty, did those when I replaced the front hub n axle two years ago... Maybe next year I will upgrade the shocks instead of the Monroe sense-track.

Good luck with the suspension!

Why twice already? I replaced both front hub n axles almost 2 years ago and still doing fine....

the first time i replaced the front axle seals i didnt replace the axle shafts, they started leaking again about a year later
the second time i did it right and replaced the axle shafts with new boots and new seals.
now i know, do it right the first time and you save your money and your time!!

i really need to do the lower 2 tie rod ends and get an alignment! hopefully in the next month or so when i install my daystar 2" lift ill take care of these issues
if by chance where did you buy your tie rod ends and the price, also are the lower ends the inner or outer?? thanks in advance!

Those are the OUTER ones ( longer sleeves/bar ), I got them from e-bay as a set, 50 bucks including shipping. I was looking for ones with grease fittings but i could not find one that came as a set, Im hoping that the ones I got last for more than 10 years.....
