Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

We live in the country on a lumpy blacktop road. Taking the jeep out for it's maiden voyage yesterday revealed some noises coming from the front end. The rig, a '00 Lardeo, has 221k miles, & I know that the left front boot on the axle is bad & the wheel bearing has a tiny amount of slack (have the new part ready to install). What are the other places I should be looking for things that may be worn out & causing the noises?
thanks,
Mike Sal

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

Ball joints, steering rod ends, worn control arm bushings or stabilizer bar bushings or links.

I guess I should have mentioned that a previous owner had already replaced both tie rod ends, and the RH axle & wheel bearing.

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

I finally got the time to take a closer look at the front suspension of the Laredo a few days ago. I found that the upper rubber bushings of the shocks had squished over time allowing the upper mount to be loose (this is what the clunking noise had sounded like....I've had this happen in the past with other vehicles). I replaced the shocks, thinking that would cure the noises.....but it did not......in fact, it only helped just a little.

I jacked up the axle & spent some time pushing & pulling & wiggling every part of the suspension & can't find anything that appears loose (it's hard to see, but there might be some cracking of the rubber in the control arm bushings). There may be a little slack in the steering box, but I didn't have a helper near by to turn the wheel while I was underneath.

What are some possibilities to explain the clunk/knock I hear when I hit small bumps on the country roads. I also noticed I get a little bit of steering wheel shimmy if I hit a bump a certain way at low speeds.
thanks,
Mike Sal

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

I would guess it is the front bushing on the front lower control arm. They are oval shaped and take a fair amount of lateral loads. I am in the process of replacing them on my '04 and will report in when I get the parts installed. I have also started a thread with the details of my project. I looked at Mopar parts but ended up with Crown as they are said to last as long and are about 2/3 cost of the Mopar pieces.

Also,
That wheel shimmy is the giveaway... it would be the suspension bits, ranging from the bushings to the more expensive metal parts getting a bit worn.

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

Trav1s, can you move the joint to see that the bushings were bad? If I would have jacked the body instead of the axle would I have been able to detect slack in those bushings? Is it as easy as pulling the arms & then pressing the bushings? Are you replacing both ends or just the axle end?

Istowell, ya, I know that it's somthing in the suspension, but I couldn't find anything with any slack in it. That's why I'm asking.

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

I am replacing the entire arm with a new one that has new bushings in both ends. I have not placed the body on jackstands then messed with the front axle. Tons of reading, windshield time, and conversations with others leads me to the project.

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

UPDATE.....last week I went ahead & replaced the front lower arms. When I pulled the old ones off, the bushings were still intact and not broken (I was hoping they would be....).

We made a trip to town (30 miles) & I can't really say for sure that there were any improvements. In fact, when we started to leave town & accellerated to 40mph & higher, there was a violent shimmy/shaking coming from the front that made me pull over. I thought maybe the lug nuts had come loose from one of the wheels.....nope, all tight. I then thought maybe the issue is with the nearly worn out tires.....so, we limped back into town & I bought a new set of tires. The trip home was uneventful (couldn't really see any outward sign of a defect in the old tires).

Two days ago my wife drove the Jeep again (it hadn't moved since buying the tires) & see called me to tell me it had another episode of violent shimmy. She nursed it home & it hasn't moved since.

So.....what's the opinions???? Bad steering box, bad damper (can't remember what you call the shock that's mounted to the track bar), bad track bar (that I just can shake by hand)????

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

A bad steering damper can increase the shacking, but should not be the cause of it. The trackbar should have a tight fit and should not have play on either side. Did you check the upper and lower ball joints for play?

Re: Rumbling knocking from Front Suspension

When I had the car jacked up, I couldn't detect any slack in any of the joints or wheel bearings or ball joints. this was with the car jacked by the body & with the axle.

Sonya drove it today & said it behaved with no shaking. I'm going to make an appointment with a front end shop & pay them to examine it.....I'm out of ideas, or I can't get the bad part suspended in a manner than I can detect looseness.
