255/60/17s on an 02' Overland?

Has anyone ever put 255/60s on their WJ? If so, can you post a picture and tell me if there were any issues (rubbing, speedo, etc.)?

Thanks. I want to buy a bigger/beefier tire for my Overland. I've heard this is about as big as you want to go with stock suspension etc.

it will look EXACTLY like the OEM 235/65/17's only about 5/8 of an inch (20mm) wider than stock. Pretty much all the specs except width are identical to OEM. I don't know if you consider that "beefy" but I don't. Beefy to me is taller AND wider, something noticeable, even if just barely. 245/65/17's is what I'm running. Its about a half inch wider than stock, about a half inch taller than stock overall and the side wall profile is about quarter inch taller than stock. You might think this is minimal but its quite noticeable when all the components that make up the tires appearance are working together. That is a beefier looking tire imo since at a glance you can see obvious differences at all angles. Coincidentally, 245/65/17 is about as large as you can go on a stock suspension with out having to worry about rubbing.

run a search for my user name, you should be able to pull pics of my set up.

Thanks GiggityGiggity. I believe I'm chasing the same goal(s) you talk about. I really want a WIDER tire with at least the same height if not a little more. At the end of the day, I just want to fill out the wheel well as much as possible without rubbing or screwing up the speedo.

I did a search on your user name and found a bunch of posts, but - unless I'm issing something - no ability to see pictures. Sorry if I just don't understand how to use this forum. Any chance you can send me a link so I can see the pictures? I'm dying to see a nice tire setup on a WJ. Thanks!!!!

Giggity. I just clicked on your user name here and viewed "all other posts" or something and still couldn't find picturs. But, I did find an earlier post you sent me where your comment then confuses me now. You said, regarding beefier tires, back in late December:

A 245/65/17 will give you a wider contact patch than stock (not as wide as 255/60/17) but it will also give you more sidewall and more overall diameter while still being with in spec so you don't throw off your speedo.

"Not as wide as 255/60/17". Sorry if I'm justa stupide, but, I'm kinda confused now. Sorry man. Just don't want to go buy 4 tires for around $150/ea, get em' mounted and then stand back and look and go, "Well then, looks like I effed up". Ya know? :).

Thanks for the continued help. Your posts have been very helpful. I love my GC Overland!

Thanks guys. That tire calculator is cool. Your tires do look cool, Giggitty, but, I don't see much difference, width'wise with the 245/65s - nor do I with 255/60s. Almost seems like I have to go to a 275/55 to get a noticeably wider tire. And I'm sure that Murphy's law will bite me in the butt in that they won't fit. :-(

I have 245/70/17's on my 01 Limited, not noticeably wider but I could tell the difference in diameter as soon as it rolled out of the shop. Fills out the wheel wells nicely. I have not had any rub, but they do only clear by a narrow margin. I also like my Bridgestone duelers much better than the stock wrangler sr/a's that were on there when I bought it.

I am interested in this too - i have just picked up a set of 17s for mine with 2 of the 4 tyres good condition.

They currently have the standard 235/65R17 tyres mounted but i did fancy something a little wider - 255/60R17s are almost the exact rolling circumference of the orginal tyres, just 20mm wider -

235/65R17 tyres will give you 2223.64mm rolling circumference
255/60R17 tyres will give you 2225.15mm rolling circumference

... thats 1.51mm (or 0.07%) difference! You would get more difference through tread wear on them!

Currently i can get a pair of 255s for a lot less than the 235s and was going to put those on the back - I feel if there were to be any rubbing issues they would be from the front on full lock. Once the fronts wear out I will just replace the whole set (or raise it a couple of inches and get something taller all round)

Still wouldnt mind a definitive answer as the OP asked as 255/60r17s all round would be something i would like to do (and prefer not to get the angle grinder / saw out to get them fit ;) )

Cheers!

Thanks 01grand. Nice lookin' ride. Call me crazy, but, I want a tire that's a lot wider, at least in the rear. Not sure I want to get into 2 different size tires for front and rear, but, I had an old 65' Buick Riviera Gran Sport and I put 275/60s in the rear and 255/60s up front. I'm thinking of trying the same on my Overland. I just love how the bigger/fuller tire fills out the wheel well and gives it a ...firmer looking stance. Call me crazy...

Thanks, I try to keep it looking good despite the vast quantities of salt on MN roads... I do not believe you can use 2 different size tires front/rear on a 4x4. I know when I bought my tires I was told I couldn't even replace just 2 tires at a time, there would be enough difference from new tread vs. old to mess up the vari-lok axles. I actually know a guy who only put on 2 new tires and it cost him big time to have the 4x4 system fixed. Quadra-trac and quadra-drive for sure work this way, not sure about selec-trac, but either way check the manual on that. If you want wider tires I would go with the 255/60s, not sure if a 265/60 or 265/55 would fit or not but you could ask at the tire shop, if you have a discount tire around I recommend them, they have always been good to me.

Just put 255/60r17s on the back of the Jeep today - with 235/65r17s on the front

They *just* clear the back dampers - can get my finger between it and the tyre - still doesnt hit so thats fine by me. Diameter was within 1mm front and rears so i dont think that will have any adverse affect on the centre diff.

Like the look from the back now - extra 20mm over the overland stock tyres is noticeable, although i have just swapped from a set of 245/70r16s so its wasnt that much wider

Will post a couple of photos when its light outside :)

I'd have to agree with Giggity here. 245/65's for me, seem to be the way to go. Also, a bit of info to think about, I was talking to a tire shop, (recently had to replace tires as well) but even when a tire says its 245/65 or anything of the same shape, there will always be a difference. There is no "true 245/65 etc." Tread depth will always vary and same for sidewall patterns. If you want a beefy tire... Get beefy tread. Its not just about how big the tire is. My 245/65's look awesome right now, over my old tires. even though its the same 'size'
