Brake Clean & Vari Lock

Just bought an 04 overland with 84k. Front diff fluid had some grey material in it, so I'm obviously going to be changing that tomorrow. (rear as well) How does the Vari-Lock do with brake clean around it? I want to make sure I get all the crap out of the diff area, but didn't want to hurt the clutches.

I'm pretty sure I'll be using Royal Purple.
What fluids have people used without added friction mod fluid and have not had chatter, and what fluids have you used that did chatter and you needed to add the LSD fluid to it?

Thanks guys,
-Nick

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I donīt know if brake cleaning stuff will do any harm to the VariLoc diff. But i think that you wonīt get all the fluid out of the VariLoc anyway.
The limited slip additive for the VariLoc diffs is not against clutch chatter, but it allows a small amount of slip ( as the name already mentiones) in the VariLoc clutches, so that you wonīt have a skiping wheel when making a turn. (in a turn, the inner wheel travels less distance then the outer wheel, so when the VariLoc would lock completely, both wheels on that axle would rotate with the same speed and cause of of them to skip.)
With the VariLoc diff, you need limited slip additive in it, or it already comes premixed, or you have to add it.

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I ment binding referring to the clutches. Was at work and wansnt thinking. The royal purple has lsd friction modifiers in it, but i want sure if they would be enough. And I didn't know about the other brands as well. I heard amsoil gear max does ok without the mopar additive, but how about mobile 1 synthetic, ect.

Thx,
-Nick

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I used Royal Purple and still had to add some limited slip additive to the diffs, but not the full amount.

I would let the diff drain for a while but I would not spray anything in there, not sure if it would damage anything but I would hate to find out the hard way.

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I use this all the time on everything instead of brake cleaner. Turned on a mechanic friend of mine to this and he loves it, no longer uses brake cleaner or anything else. I've never had a problem with it. I would not spray it on any clutches though. Have never done it.

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I used brake parts cleaner...not a ton, but that's what I used to clean it up in there. I threw on a new cover and filled with with Royal purple, both front and rear. Absolutely no problems.

Re: Brake Clean & Vari Lock

I ended up Using some brake clean up in the diff, not spraying on the carrier and such. Ended up being pretty clean (of metallic matter). I wiped it all down pretty good, scrubbed the diff cover clean (looks like fluid was changed mostly regular, but wasn't really "cleaned out, more, remove cover, drain fluid, install cover, fill.

Thanks for all the replies!

-Nick
