Help! Refurbishing corroded stock wheels

Just curious if anyone has gotten the insane amount of wheel peeling and corrosion out of their stock rims as me? 99 GC Ltd. v6. I was planning on buffing them somehow and wondering if anyone has any tips or tricks for making this easy? They don't have to be too fancy as they will likely be plasti dipped..

Re: Help! Refurbishing corroded stock wheels

If you're dippin' them, I'd just go get a wire wheel that you attach to a drill, and clean them up with that. Then I'd prime, and "dip". If you decide to use regular wheel paint, I'd layer on a few coats of clear too. As far as prep goes though, you've got to start with a smooth, clean surface if you want to finish with one.

Unhappy Re: Help! Refurbishing corroded stock wheels

Mine look worse than that, 2000 Jeep GC wheels, hoeycomb factory wheels, and really hard to get a wire brush in there, so what are my options, not trying to hi jack your thread?

This is interesting, as my jeep only has 40,000 miles and would like to make it look new again, but the wheels, Yuk!!!!!!

PS What is the Dip you are talking about?

For those, I'd suggest getting them sandblasted if you want a good place to start with your refurb. That means you'll be pulling the tires off and be without a ride for a few days while you prep, paint and remount tires. If you're really looking to keep it long term though, why not keep the ugly ones and run them in the winter, and get a new set of wheels and tires to run the rest of the year? Yeah, it's not cheap...but I think it would pay off in the end. Flawlessly new wheels, only seeing good weather would last you the life of the Jeep. Plus you can always unload them after you sell if you wanted to.

The "dip" is plasti-dip. It's a rubberized kind of spray paint you can find at most hardware stores. I've personally never used it, but it seems a lot of people on here have had success with it.

Re: Help! Refurbishing corroded stock wheels

Yes, that's one of the options I am considering, and what would be a reasonable wheel to buy that would look good on the "Red" 2000 Jeep GC Model? As you said, winter wheels really make sense, as we get a lot of salt spread around Cincinnati for more ice than snow.
It's the wifes ride, so want to keep close to a stock look, and easy to clean, unlike those stpid honeycomb wheels...........

those are bad.

if it were me, I'd skip the plastidip and get them professionally powdercoated.

Well....not to be biased, but I love mine. They are Jeep SRT replica wheels, you can see the details in my signature below. They bolt right up. Total for the wheels and tires delivered to my door was about $1500 from our vendor here : OE Wheels LLC - Jeep Garage - Jeep Forum

They've got other colors and options too...but I'd only recommend these for a street set up. Then just run your ugly wheels in the bad months.

If you look around our For Sale forum you might find some used ones too.

CF dipped center caps with the painted calipers looks sick. Got my eye on some reps next spring or jk takeoffs. Wk 2 takeoffs are also sick.

Re: Help! Refurbishing corroded stock wheels

Strip off the old clear with some stripper. Then sand them with 1000-1200 grit. Wash down with white spirit and leave to dry. Run over with a tack cloth, then spray with 2k high build primer.

The high build primer should take out any deviations on the surface. Then spray with whatever colour you prefer. You only need one good even coat. Next use a 2K clear coat. Only use 2K if you can do it either outside or in a well ventilated area and use a full mask respirator.

You want three to four coats of this. It will dry within 48 hours, but will take at least a week to fully cure properly.
