Opinions on Cooper AT/3 ?

It surprised me how few options I found for an all terrain type tread in a 235/65-17. This is the original and recommended size for my 03 GC. I know many/most people just upsize the tire but I'm still on the fence about that, there is so much conflicting info about changing tire size I decided to play it safe this time around, plus there would be the added expense of buying (5) tires if I did. I have been using Discount Tire for so many years I just go there automatically. I told my guy what I wanted and we searched, all we could come up with was the Cooper AT/3, an aggressive tread pattern in the right size. Had to order them out of New Jersey (I'm in So Cal). The only thing that concerns me now is that I do not see them mentioned or discussed anywhere in this forum. I know Cooper is not a "top tier" product but I have had them before on a Ram 4x4 and was happy. My "off roading" is pretty much limited to construction sites (nails and debris) and the occasional dirt/ gravel/ washboard road fishing and camping.
So my question is, is there something wrong with this tire? Why don't I see anyone using them here? It's not too late to change my mind as they aren't here yet but my guy would be very unhappy I'm sure.

Re: Opinions on Cooper AT/3 ?

There's nothing wrong with the tire. There are plenty of threads out here where the Cooper AT/3 comes up in conversation.

LOL... there are also a lot of high end tire snobs on this forum. (That ought to get some replies )

I had the AT/3's on my 02 GCL. I found them to be an excellent year round tire... quieter, great tread life and excellent snow/ice grip.

I went with them for 3 reasons...

- One of the few tires still produced in the US.
- Had the tread pattern that I prefer.
- Priced far less than the competition. A great value in my opinion.

If they made them in 265/50R20, they'd be on my Jeep right now.

Re: Opinions on Cooper AT/3 ?

Had 255/65r17's on my '04 Columbia Edition for 3 years this month. I believe they have 40k miles on them and I have been very happy with them. I don't think I will get near as many miles as many others because I drive on gravel roads a fair amount of the time.

As for Cooper, they have tried to change the brand reputation in the past 10 years. Their low end tires are to be avoided but the middle to upper end lines are good.

Re: Opinions on Cooper AT/3 ?

I ran the AT3 in the 235/70R17 size and really liked them. REALLY loving the 245/70R17 ST Maxx!

Re: Opinions on Cooper AT/3 ?

I haven't tried them yet, but I'm about to. I need good tires for deep snow and can't afford to change them for summer so I buy all-terrain tires. Right now I'm running BFG Rugged Terrain A/T's 245/70R16 and have had good luck with them. They bite very well in snow and gravel and run quiet on the road with just a little hum at speed. As far as tread wear is concerned, I'm tough on tires because when delivering newspapers, I'm doing a lot of u-turns, k-turns, and low speed maneuvering that scrubs off rubber quickly. I've got about 35K miles on them and they'll need to be replaced by winter.

I've been told by other jeepers that Cooper Discovery AT3's are better on tread wear and are cheaper in my size than most other tires. I'm about to find out.
