Rear brake pads too tall (pics) - 2000 GC Limited

Hi, I'm running into the same problem I ran into 3 years ago when I last changed my rear pads. The pads I bought back then at Auto Zone and Advantage Auto were too tall for the caliper. Now, these Advantage pads pictured below are also too tall, basically where I have the red square.

So I bought new calipers from Advantage, thinking that their pads would have to fit their caliper. Plus I just wanted to compare their caliper to mine, thinking that maybe the previous owner installed a different caliper at some point. But no, my caliper is the same - part# 4829.

But then I noticed on Advantage's pad, the bracket doesn't fit perfectly flush. (See square on 2nd pic.) On mine, it sits perfectly flush. (See last pic.) And therein lies the problem which makes the pad too tall to fit in the caliper. Last time, I took a dremel to the pads to make them fit. But I don't want to do that again.

Has anybody else run into this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Markon

I had to grind down the pad backings on mine a few months ago when I attented to change the pads (also a 2000 GC Laredo). At first I thought I was doing something wrong, but they just wouldn't fit.

Thanks Mike. Do you remember where you bought the pads? Today, I'm going take the to drive down to our NAPA store and see if their pads are any different.

Boy do I feel stupid. The pads didn't fit because I wasn't removing the retaining clip. Once I removed the clip and installed the pads, then put the clip back on, it no longer sat exactly flush - but it didn't have to. All is good now.

Get yourself a jeep service manual, it will help a lot with future repairs.
