The Age old tire question!!!

Hello everyone!

I have a 02 GC Limited with the HO 4.7l V8. We have owned it since new, and at 14k miles we replaced the tires. I put on Bridgestone Dueler Alenza H/L's, and changed the size to 275/55/17...it's a beefy tire and looks great on the Jeep! At just over 66k, it is now time to put new tires on...and I am having issues deciding on tires. I will probably move back down to a more "standard" size tire. I think I will go to the 255/60/17, I was going to go with the general Altimax HP...but we recently put Continental Extreme contact DWS's on our Mini cooper, and they are an awful tire, and they are going to come off. I actually got motion sickness driving it! So no tires made by General. It came with Goodyear Eagle LS's, and they were terrible after the first winter; which is why they came off so soon.

I want something that wears well, good in snow since I am in Minnesota...and something that will have a decent sidewall for stiffness...suggestions?

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

I know you said no Generals but a lot of people love the Grabber AT2s on here. Also the pricey BFG ATs are an excellent tire that will give you over 50k mileage and have great winter traction.

I'm from Northwestern PA, mostly thick woods. We always run more of an off road type tread in the winter up home. We always get a lot of snow and roads aren't kept clear like in the cities and bigger places.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

BFG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best all around tire for on and off road, snow, and they last forever. I had them on my TJ and my XJ, and they always looked like the day I had them installed. My wife has the BFG long trails on her WK, and that's a great tire too if you're leaning more towards road use.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

I have heard good things about the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS (available at discount tire) or their Wildpeak AT (same tire different name... why who knows anyway...) I am thinking on trying these when I need new tires. They are aggressive enough for good snow traction but still quiet on the highway from the reviews I have read. They are not as aggressive as the BFG (which I loved on my old ZJ) but they are much less expensive.

I run Destination A/T's in the winter and love them. 245/65R17's are the size I have on my 02 Limited.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

Thanks for the replies! I will have to check out the BFG long trails, this jeep has never seen off road, and probably never will. (I think that would give my wife a heart attack! The jeep is her baby.) Anyone heard anything on the pirelli scorpion verde tires? I sometimes forget that I am driving a Jeep, and not a Mini Cooper S! It's surprising how well the Jeep can actually take corners.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

I've always heard that Pirelli's are great tires....but soft, and wear quickly.

If you really want the Jeep to take corners well look into getting the upgraded addco sway bars.... Check out some threads in the suspension and DIY sections.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

Pirelli Scorpions are awesome if you're keeping it on the street. I've had 'em on past vehicles and I love 'em. My sister has a set on her ZJ and they've lasted quite a while. And I agree with 01grand on the sway bars.

Re: The Age old tire question!!!

Just installed a set of Pirelli Scorpions ATR 245/65/17 on my jeep. Too soon though to give any good (or bad) comments on them, but sofar i like them for highway driving, a quiet tire.
I had previously GoodYear TrippleTread 235/65/17 and they lasted for 99000 Km. I hardly go offroad, however many of the roads we have overhere could easily compare to a medium offroad track.
