Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

So while I'm not an IT expert, I do deal with a lot of start ups and such on the business side and that's essentially what this has become and JG has a revenue 'problem' right now. While there is still the option of Scott hosting it himself, it sounds like that's a tough proposition.

So revenue has to increase to support the 3rd party hosting...which leads us to the two levers we can play with - either ads or membership. I'm sure there are plenty of creative Jeep oriented minds on here that might be able to come up with some ideas and incentives, either through promotional agreements with other sites or some new feature, like a facebook or cardomain page for your Jeep that would only be available to full members. Obviously that takes time to develop but it's a thought for revenues down the road.

I just think that there are too many regular posters on here that it's silly you couldn't get them to pay $3-$10 a month to use the knowledge on this site plus some other 'fancy features'. Maybe offer a month or two free, once you start modding, you're hooked and need the resources here, i know that happened to me and i felt guilty for not donating. Too me right now though, speaking honestly, i didn't see anything totally eye catching to make me donate more than the level 2.

Scott i dont know much about this crap but what i do know is that if you want to do what you're saying... it will def make Scott a much busier and stressed out individual. I say F it... keep it how it is. If there comes a time where you need to sell ad space, just do it... F it man... right in the butt.

A few ads won't hurt anything and will help pay the bills. I am not really a major computer person but if I can be of any help you know where to find me.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

you know what great about ads.

they bring in extra money to run the site. and if you don't want to see ads just install ad block and all goes back to normal.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

Bring in some ad banners to help with costs. Proper ad's actually are useful. Vendors here can even submit their own websites and such.

I work in a datacenter installing and maintaining servers. I tell you make sure you use raid and make sure your getting enterprise quality drives. Reg home stuff will fail in short order!

Are you going to run this out of your house with a business line (make sure that you have redundancy here if you do) or out of a hosting site?

In order to maintain a stable site, 2-3 nodes would be ideal for failover (or cloud which you should really never have downtime...)... It'll be pricy, but like the other posts, servers aren't really that reliable... honestly. I make a living off of replacing parts 40 hours a week. lol Drives go out fast and have the most problems with corruption. Use RHEL... it's free and most stable IMO.

But like I said... simple banners are usually decent. I say get some AD revenue to help buffer the costs. I'd enact a time out function that boots idle users and auto logs them out. A small forum here in town for aquariums has this and it keeps memory and traffic usage down.
