Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

what would that change??

Sorry if that is a stupid quesiton, but I would be curious to know the reasoning behind a change? Maybe im ingnorant to the "behind the scenes" working of JG, but if it would ultimately benefit not only the owners and mods of this forum, but the members, I would say go for it.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

^That's something to think about for sure. Maintaining a server is not easy and time consuming. I would leave it to the professionals. The setup now is fine, cheaper than what buying and maintaining a server would be.

But hey do what you want.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

That's not a task or situation I'd welcome if it were me Scott. As has been touched on the opportunity for failure is too great.
eg: You need to be able to take a holiday wiothout constant fear of the server failing and leaving the forum dead for however long your holiday is.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

scott what are the Pros and Cons (for JeepGarage) in your mind of owning and maintaining the server, once you identify them and the pro's outweigh the cons, then i would say do it.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

Scott,
I am not certain of your level of expertise so I apologize in advance if this is something you already have considered.

In my opinion setting up a server (purchase and maintenance) for this number of members and visitors the cost will outweigh the benefit. At first the monthly cost will not be too bad, but when something breaks (and believe me it will happen) if you cannot fix it you will have to find someone who can which is timely and costly. If you have the technical background to run and maintain a server then this will not be as much of an issue, but as stated you do run a higher risk of significant downtime. Are you going to pay someone to configure a web server for you or will you be setting this up yourself? I assume the server will be housed at your home and that will require a fair amount of bandwidth which you may already have. Security will need to be regularly maintained as well to protect the site from not only attacks but regular usage I.E. users that have infected PC's accessing your database. Even with these 3 key things your time maintaining this site will easily double and it will be a frusturating endeavour if it is not something you are regularly used to. If you have friends or acquaintances that will assist you that will be helpful, but trust me when I say there will be times you are going to spend long hours trying to figure out why certain services are stopping only to find out it was a really simple answer. There are more things to consider but I didn't want to get too long winded especially if you already have considered these things. Depending on what you plan to do it can cost a lot, but it is most certainly going to take a lot of your time.

Thanks for all the comments so far. This is exactly what I was looking for. The pro to this is the exorbant cost we are getting charged for hosting and how long can we continue on said hosting. I'm not sure how much further we can go.

Yeah those hositing companies will get you fast when they notice you start to grow. I too would consider a server, but I would also like to have a dependable expert on hand in the event something goes wrong. Having your own server would also provide you more customization and additional services to provide. Hosting your own server can aslo be a sizable monthly cost on necessary bandwidth as well. It would certainly be cheaper to have your own, but you run a chance on gaining more headaches.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

Being a fellow forum admin, I can tell you that running vbulletin is cake from the front end. Maintaining the back end of vbulletin and keeping the server alive is a headache in itself... even when I have a friend who works at the data center where my box currently resides.

Power outages...no problem.

Hardware. Failures. Suck.

Drives. Not to worry as long as your backup isn't corrupted. You can survive off of a backup drive.

Boards. Ehhh. Board failure sucks. Normally takes a few days to have one shipped in, then about another half day to have it installed/reconfig server.

Forum Hijacks. I hate unauthorized access. Always close the door behind yourself.

Contractors. Always a treat when a contractor is digging outside the data center and cuts through a MAIN fiber trunk line knocking you as well as several thousand servers offline for an unknown amout of time.

Dude, I could go on and on. Either way, it's no walk in the park.

Re: Need ALL members input!!!!! PLEASE READ!

Wish I lived closer Scott I could help you run it. I am an IT professional working mainly on PCs and networks and learning more about running servers as time passes, and running a server can go from a piece of cake to disaster faster than than an SRT8 0-60. Hosting fees can get quite expensive, but you are paying them to have the headaches when there are server issues and to maintain the hardware and net connections, managing all that on your own would be stressful, and you have to be on call 24/7 in case of emergency.
