Serice Manual excerpts posting

Is there a policy for the forum on posting excerpts from the copyrighted Factory Service manual in response to postings ?

Now that CJF has released the recent model service manual on CD it is often easy to respond to a problem with an excerpt. I have seen such postings before but wanted to know if the forum has any directive from CJF concerning small excerpts.

I need to ask because I am on another forum that GM permits not only ecerpts but entire service manuals to be available for download & what exactly is "fair use" of copyrighted material is somewhat vague.

What is the arrangement/policy here please ?

Re: Serice Manual excerpts posting

You could always link to the manual and give a page #.

Maybe people who really want to know will start reading the manual instaed of having you "read it to them".

Re: Serice Manual excerpts posting

I can't link because it is not online. I bought the CD ($165) and it does not have page numbers either (or search or print just oddball graphics that doesn't work with IE 10).

What I do on another forum and with GM's permission is to do a print screen, crop to the relevant piece, and post to illustrate how to do something. I was wondering if JF had a similar agreement with CJF but could not find anything in the FAQ.

Re: Serice Manual excerpts posting

Please don't post copy protected content. Fair use is generally considered to be a few paragraphs (like in a news release) and so you could post small parts to be used conversationally or to discuss a specific procedure or problem.

Theoretically when copy protected content is posted in it's entirety, the copyright holder would be within their rights to require that it be removed or take legal action.

Re: Serice Manual excerpts posting

OK, I have been going so far as to paraphrase rather than quoting for things like exactly what an error code means. All it usually takes is one or two sentances or a paragraph though a piece of an illustration can be really valuable.

Has JG requested permition to post excerpts from service information from CJF ? I have noticed that "Milhous" has posted wiring diagrams that obviously came from manuals.

There needs to be a way to convey certain service information to members without violating any restrictions and the best means is to be able to quote from factory service information. I will make the request if necessary but it would really be better if it could be granted to the JG with rules for moderation rather than an individual.

This is what was done by members of at least one forum on the AACA.

The funny thing is that strict interpretation of the terms and conditions on the CD would preclude posting or even sharing with you what the terms and conditions are.

Re: Serice Manual excerpts posting

Sorry but that is not an available avenue. From Scribd t&c
"(1) You are the creator and owner of or have the necessary licenses, rights, consents, releases and permissions to use and to authorize Scribd and Scribd’s Users to use Your User Content as necessary to exercise the licenses granted by You in this section and in the manner contemplated by Scribd and these Terms; "
and
"(3) The use of Your User Content as permitted herein does not and will not infringe, violate, or misappropriate any third-party right, including any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, moral right, privacy right, right of publicity, or any other intellectual property or proprietary right"
While I have download from publicly available sources over 300MB of data on the 2011-2014 GCs, the factory service manual contains a lot that is not otherwise available and its T&Cs prohibit dissemination.
Also wold be difficult to post since is not one or even 20 files but over 1100 files in many different formats (may be why there is no search capability).
OTOH I have seen Milhouse post charts and jpgs which is why I wondered if the JG had permission from CJF to publish small excerpts as teaching aids (generally excluded from the DMCA).
If not, I will ask CJF for permission myself but it would really be better coming from the forum.
Sorry to be so AR about this. I want to help but for mainly ethical reasons I do everything in my power to comply with published T&Cs and the DMCA.
Of course I also think that anyone here obviously has a PC of some sort so not spending $25 to have OBD-II monitoring capability for a $30k-$60k automobile is not being very cost effective.
Not saying everyone should spend $165 (delivered) for the somewhat annoying service manual, is mainly my airframer background that likes documentation, but $25 ?
