Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

I just made a donation to the Fisher House for our troops and was wondering if Jeepgarage would wanna do something, if not already, to support our overseas brothers and sisters. I havent really searched around on here to see if there's already something set up, if so let me know so I can help out.

Re: Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

I know a bunch of people here send support to service members overseas. I'm in if we do a group donation.

My favorite things to get when I was deployed were just hand written letters. Make sure to include an email address if you send stuff - I wrote back to everyone that included one, feels good and they are super happy to hear back from you.

Re: Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

we do the boxes and the letters at my job.

i got a reply every time ...... one guy told me about what he traded my stuff for.

usually we get one person link, like a work person,s relative, etc. then we send stuff to that whole unit.

we could do a thread about what people do for the peeps that defend us.

not sure we want to endorse something specific........but would sure encourage whatever everyone can do.

Re: Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

I dont know anyone specific fighting over there, and find its easy to forget whats actually going on over there. I was listening to the radio the other day and heard about the Fisher House was having a pledge thing so I wanted to help out, wasnt anything big but I gave what I could to what I think is a great organization helping the wounded soldiers and there families. They are opening one up in Boston soon.

Re: Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

My employer did quite a thing today. He sent us an email about 3 weeks ago outlining what we were going to do for our office Christmas "celebration" (for lack of a better word). The company allocates $3,000 every year for our Christmas "celebration." When I read that I have to admit I was a little shocked considering how small our office is (~12 employees). Anyways, instead of going out to a nice restaurant, he (CEO) asked if we would be all in for helping out a troop who is in need. Of course everyone in the office supported this idea, we were pretty excited about it.

So, we were paired with a family - husband (been deployed a few times, etc), wife, and triplets! They had not planned on having triplets (obviously), so this really put them in quite a bind; They aren't really financially sound to support 3 young kids. Our office immediately fell in love with the possibility to help this family out.

We purchased a washer and dryer, triplet stroller, 3 car seats, tons of clothes, and about a years supply of diapers and baby wipes (can you imagine how quickly they are going to fly through those!) - and at $20 a box for diapers, this was a pretty big contribution. Everyone in the office also spent about ~$50 of their own money and got additional items for them.

Well, when they got to the office today, WOW, what a rewarding feeling! They both burst into tears once they saw what we did for them (kids were freakin' adorable too!). We had Carabbas deliver lunch, sat around and chatted with them for a few hours. Such a wonderful day.

As we prepared to wrap up the day, my boss sat everyone down and let the family know that this was not the end of our commitment to them, only the beginning. He let them know that whatever they need (financial help, some of us to come over and babysit, etc, etc, etc) that our company would be there for them. At this point everyone in the office was tearing up... just the joy on their faces.. man, it's something I'll never forget. (hell, I'm tearing up now just typing this.) Such good people.

Anyways, I just thought I'd share such an incredible experience I had today and how rewarding it felt to help out someone from our armed services. I can only imagine the pains and hardships serving puts them through. Bless them all.

Re: Support Our Troops Link/Thread?

Matt, thats an awesome story, and why I want to/try to help in anyway. Its easy to forget about the sacrafices people are making over there, and also there family over here trying to make ends meet on top of knowing there loved one is on a battle field and may not come home at any time.

Your company is great for doing that Matt, and there needs to be more of that from everyone.
