2010 patriot wont start

I hAve a 2010 jeep patriot. Lately if I drive it for more the 15 mins and turn it if it won't start. Unless I leave it sit a couple hours and tonight its been sitting for a while and still won't start...its not my battery and I don't believe its the starter .u can hear it try to engage. But other then that there us nothing at all. Almost simular to a dead battery. Except I hAve a full battery power.

Re: 2010 patriot wont start

What makes you believe that it is not the starter? Did you measure the battery voltage, because even a new battery will discharge if for example the alternator doesn't charge it.
Also bad ground connections or dirty/corroded battery terminals can cause starting problems.
But when you say that it won't start, do you mean that the starter turns over with normal speed, but it won't fire, or it doesn't crank at all?

Re: 2010 patriot wont start

I tested the battery and it great. And the alternator is doing it job to....it won't crank at all... Maybe the starter is getting to hot or a sensor is acting up. I've do e the key dance and nothing comes up maybe I should go get my started tested but I'm almost positive its not the starter. My thermostat get above half in under 20 mins even in winter . I've changed the coolant the oil cleaned out the fuel system. Nothing changes

Re: 2010 patriot wont start

So if it doesnīt crank, you first have to see if the starter relay clicks. Donīt know the patriot, but it should have a relay and fuse box under the hood, where normally the starter relay sits. You could swap the starter relay with for example the horn relay (they are normally the same), and try again. If the relay clicks when trying to start, then or the starter motor is bad, or the small wire to the starter solenoid makes bad contact or is loose, or a bad ground.
If the starter relay doesnīt click when trying to start, then the ignition switch could be the problem, the Park/Neutral safety switch or wiring.
But since you said that you could hear the starter motor trying to rotate, i would think that the starter motor is the problem.
With "the thermostat goes over half in 20 minutes", you mean that the temperature indication goes over half scale in 20 minutes? That is quite slow, because the engine should warm up quicker.

Re: 2010 patriot wont start

Okay I'll check those things out, but its wierd because the only time it won't start is after a long drive. And if I turn it off and start it againg right away it start...only after sitting for like 10 mins it fails....but it starts every other time if it has not been ran in a couple hours. Thanks frango 100.

Re: 2010 patriot wont start

Is what you hear a faint click from the small starter relay, or is it the starter solenoid? (which is a heavy relay mounted to the starter, which makes a loud clack). The starter solenoid will engage the starter motor to the flex plate, but will also make the electrical circuit for the starter motor. The electrical contacts inside the solenoid can become bad over time, causing a no start condition once in a while, which will become more frequent.
But just to rule out the more simple possibility, i would swap the starter relay with the horn relay. The fact that it wonīt start after shutting down and waiting for some minutes, shows that the heat of the engine is causing the problem. While driving, air circulates under the hood and keep the components at a reasonable temperature, but when shut down, the heat of the engine will heat up all components to higher temperatures and can cause problems then. Could be with the starter motor relay, but also with the solenoid.
