2012 Patriot water leak problem

Hey guys,

Looking for a little advice with an issue I'm having with my 2012 Jeep Patriot Limited. We purchased it new from a jeep dealer and a few months after purchase we noticed what seemed to be a water leak which caused the headliner to become saturated and drip water from around the rear cargo area dome light mount.

We took the vehicle into the dealership and they said they replaced a "grommet" and it should fix the problem.

Long story short, about a year later we discovered it was still leaking water from the same area after a heavy rain. We brought it to a closer Jeep dealership for service. They stated they could not find anything wrong with the car and did not discover a leak.

A few days ago we came out to our Jeep after it had been raining all day to discover the rear cargo area was covered in water along with the passenger side rear floor matt.

What are my options here? The vehicle is still under a full factory warranty, but it currently has about 27,000 miles on it, so the clock is ticking.

If I bring it in again for service and they "can't find anything wrong", what can I do? Can I say the car is a lemon with a leak and ask them to replace it?

Thank you for any help . . .

Re: 2012 Patriot water leak problem

My wife has an 06 Grand Cherokee that leaked the same way yesterday. It turned out to be a plugged drain.

Here's a test you can try. Open the sunroof and carefully fill the recessed drip track around the edge. Watch the flow as it empties. You may find one of the drain holes is plugged or slow. If your car is on an incline, that hole may be the only one that can remove the water and being plugged, causes an overflow into the cabin.

I used a bicycle pump with an adapter that fits an air mattress style orifice (the kind you normally blow up with your mouth) to pressurize the drain line and blow out the obstruction. I pumped it about 4 times, heard a pop under the car where the drain line exits....problem solved.
