Re: Head Unit Replacement

Hey Fernando.

I dont know that any headunit is any easier than any other (unless you stay with stock).

My personal opinion on the matter would be to find something you want with all the feature sets you are looking for/need (satalite radio, HD radio, Bluetooth integration, TV, whatever...) then go figure out the best way and how you will utimately hook it up.

If it is a 99 then I have provided the plug and play adapters in my most recent post before this one.

This is a good explination -- > http://wjjeeps.com/radio_adap_diag.jpg

Also - if you want to retain the steering wheel controls, our friend cheapjeep has shared his experience with this product -- > http://www.crutchfield.com/S-xDGbKXN...WC.html?tp=476

Best of luck!! Go make it happen and post pics about it!

i had thought about those adapters, but there are two reasons i dont get them.

1: cost
2: i used a headunit and wiring harness i had lying around from a previous XJ i had.

You are loosing me here...

You mention cost as a factor, but looking online they are like 15 bucks http://www.scosche.com/car-audio/dir...ection-harness ? Sometimes you have to calculate what your time is worth (if it isn't worth much to you, then by all means take all year to accomplish it, LOL) and also take into consideration the certain aggravation factor you are introducing into the project (sometimes this can be unnecessary). For 15 dollars it would be a no brainier for me, but to each is his own. I enjoy my music too much to be with out it.

And you mention you are attempting to use a wiring harness from an XJ? I don't understand how that can be a recipe for success. If you buy the appropriate adapter for your model you can simply color match wires and splice them together. Not sure how it works with another vehicle wiring harness. Best of luck, sir.

ive mistaken, i thought those were the OEM-2 or whatever wjjeeps calls them that were $80. i apologize, however im using the Chrylser adapters that solder to the back of the head unit.

Also, the dual 7 pin connectors are the same for MOST Chrysler vehicles of about the same year. (part # for the GC and XJ one i have, are the same. its the one with female dual 7pin connectors, that solders to the head unit wires) ive got the head unit in and working properly, and everything is soldered and done right. my only question is... what is that purple and yellow wire off my itself in a white connector for? its one wire, that does not go in to the aftermarket harness adapter is have. Some say its for steering wheel controls. but i can find no confirmation of this

bsmith0612 -

Ok - can't you simply color match the wires then with the radio color wires? Maybe I am mistaken since it has been some time since I found myself in that position

Also - posting pics on the site. Might I suggest....
#1 - setting up a free account at imgur.com
#2 - upload pics to imgur account
#3 - copy and paste the code provided for your uploaded pics called "BBC Message boards and Forums" and paste it in your message to us!

Then you too can share pictures. we <3 pictures.

Re: Head Unit Replacement

@GrantB & bsmith0612:

A much simpler method that requires no account registration and one that I like because it allows guests/non-members of the site to see the pictures instead of using the built-in picture embedder on Jeep Garage which limits it to members only.

1) Go to http://tinypic.com/

2) Click "Choose File" and find the file/image on your computer

3) Once you've selected it click "Upload Now!"

4) You'll be prompted to type in a security code from an image to prove you're not a bot.

5) When that's done, 4 options will be show:

"HTML for Websites"

"IMG Code for Forums & Message Boards" <----(Copy this link and paste into your message on Jeep Garage)

"URL for E-Mail & IM"

"Direct Link for Layouts"

i have color coded ant matched the wires. everything is in, and working. i am just curious what they yellow and purple wire does. there is no corresponding wire in the aftermarket adapter harness. the yellow and purple wire is in a white connector by itself.

Re: Head Unit Replacement

Ok I am going to show what a really big idiot I am. I used to know car stereos like the back of my hand, but in the last 20 years I have gotten so far out of it, that I might as well be a complete newb. What I am looking for is a head unit that I can integrate with the Infiniti system on my 2003 Grand Cherokee Overland. I want to be able to plug and play, but play everything. I understand that a lot of Head Units can accommodate adapters for Steering Wheel Control, but what kind of outputs do I need for the amplifier under the back seat, and how can you tell whether it has a CD changer control or not. I have been a customer of Crutchfield fro as long as I can remember, but as far as I can tell, the descriptions for the head units they recommend don't say anything about it. Other than the OEM, can anyone make any suggestions?
