To those who have installed an aftermarket or Double DIN radio in a WJ...

My Pioneer AVH-P3300BT arrives tomorrow and the Double DIN dash kit from Automotive Specialty Systems (http://www.automotivespecialtysystem...-din-dash-kit/) arrives soon. I have a few questions for the people have done this already.

1-Did you bypass the infinity amp or run the radios output to it?
1a-What advantage would there be to doing this?
1b-Could I not just slave the dash tweeters from the front speakers with a cross-over?
2-Did you install a parking brake bypass?
2a-Did you use a switch or relay?
2b-Does it make a difference in phone dialing?
3-In modifying the sub-dash, do you find the bezel stays in tight?

1-Did you bypass the infinity amp or run the radios output to it?

Run through it. It has the 6 Channel setup for the dynamic tweeters.

1a-What advantage would there be to doing this?

See above

1b-Could I not just slave the dash tweeters from the front speakers with a cross-over?

If you want, but it's wayy more work for no gain.

2-Did you install a parking brake bypass?

I always do.

2a-Did you use a switch or relay?

Either works. relay is automatic. It's up to you.

2b-Does it make a difference in phone dialing?

Yes. You can only diall from address book when not bypassed.

3-In modifying the sub-dash, do you find the bezel stays in tight?

I made my own, but yes it does.

Have fun!!

Thanks

I am not able to find it, but I read somewhere that the factory amplifier had a built in crossover for the front 6x9's and tweeters (low pass for the 6x9's and high pass for the tweeters).
As for 1b, I could just parallel the front speakers and tweeters where I would bypass the amplifier (with a high pass filter for the tweeters).

I haven't done it but am looking to get stuck into this next year with the same dash kit.

Could you please take a few before/during/after pics of the dash cutting please for reference? That part is the only bit I'm unsure of how involved it is but the result is superb! I'd normally just get a decent single DIN but I want a double DIN to see the album artwork on an iPod not just track name/title. Yes, I'm crazy. LOL

Re: To those who have installed an aftermarket or Double DIN radio in a WJ...

Wired up the radio harness to the aftermarket factory plug, soldering and heat shrinking all connections. I did install the bypass relay. I removed my factory radio and tested the Pioneer out in the Jeep. The sound was considerably better. Bluetooth paired with my phone and it worked flawlessly. The SD card playback is a little slow to load at first (I have about 1700 mp3s on a 16GB class 4 card), but once scanned it is fairly responsive.

I took a good look in the sub-dash area where the modifications will be required to fit the double din radio and it does not appear to be as significant as I thought. I will try to take pictures before, during and after the dash cutting. Automotive Specialty Systems does provide installation instructions, which are decent...I may send them my pictures to see if they can improve the instructions a little.

Now I am just waiting on my Double DIN dash kit from Automotive Specialty Systems and I will be installing the head unit, video and audio cables and bezel...

I have a 7" stand-alone 12v powered lcd screen with vga and two composite inputs that I will be connecting in the back seat area for the kids to share. I am going to wire the rear zone audio to separate 1/8" jacks to wired headphones.

Here is the easiest place for a 7" monitor if you have this kind of mount. Mine has a mounting hole on the bottom so I got a piece of thin steel, bent it in a vise for a better viewing angle(You'll have to experiment with that a bit),sandwiched it between the console lid and hinge and you're all set.Tried putting the plate between the hinge and console but it doesn't let the lid open fully so the monitor moves with the lid . You can then run all of your wires under the console. I Just need to find some 90 degree adapters to clean things up a bit.
