01 GC Transmission fluid question

I have a friend that bought a used 01 GC. He had his tranny fluid changed and now it's slipping. I suspect the service place may have put the wrong tranny fluid in. I recall when I had my 03 and was having some work done on the tranny the service guy said I had to use Mopar fluid, which I did at the time. Can this be the source of his problem?

FLUID CAUTIONS:

ATF+4® MUST always be used in vehicles that were originally filled with ATF+4®.

ATF+4® is compatible with ATF+3 and can be used to top off vehicles that currently have ATF+2 or ATF+3.

DO NOT use ATF+2 or ATF+3 to top off vehicles that have ATF+4® fluid

The use of non-recommended fluids can result in transmission failure. The usual results are erratic shifts, slippage, abnormal wear and eventual failure due to fluid breakdown and sludge formation. Avoid this condition by using recommended fluids only.

I thought so. I recall this now when I had my 03 and was having tranny issues in 05, which was totaled this past year. Woman ran a stop sign and rolled our GC so it was off to the JY with it. However, I bought an almost pristine 05 WK Limited as a replacement for it.

I wonder if the wrong fluid would cause it to slip. Is the jeep not moving at all?
If he has the 5-45 RFE tranny, you have to be sure that the oval filter seal is placed in the oil pump inlet before the filter is put in place. failure to do so, will cause the filter to drop down and the pump sucking air.

I will let my friend know about this. He has a Limited with 4x4 and the 4L I6. I don't know which tranny the 6 was mated to. The Jeep does move and right now it seems to be ok. Don't know exactly what circumstances to vehicle operates. I'll ask tomorrow.

Anyone who tells you that the wrong fluid will make a trans slip is off their rocker. It can make shifts harsh but not slipping. A trans that slips or neutralizes has worn bands, period end of story. Was a filter service done? Or a flush? All they did was speed up the inevitiable. The detergents in the new fluid was the gum and sludge off the bands and thus the slippage.

The I6 uses the 42RE tranny, that one is different then the 5-45RFE.
