Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

I'll go check shortly, When I went to turn the wheel, the wheel on the front side of the belt spun easily, but the wheel that they belt went across was not turnable by hand really.

Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

I can get a compressor from junk yard for about $100, but I called around about adding freon afterwards and everyone said that if I replace it, that it will probably leak and then I should replace the condensor and other things so it would probably run a few hundred up to $1000.

Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

Don't see a reason that it would leak, eventhough its from the junkyard. If you can find one which still has the freon charge when you remove it, it should be ok.
Ofcourse its junkyard stuff, so probably no guarantees. Only when the system on your car has no charge anymore, you can expect more troubles.
Didn't understood your answer about turning the compressor wheel. Did you firstly remove the serpentine belt and then tried to turn the compressor wheel? Ofcourse you can't turn the wheel where the serpentine belt runs across (with the belt in place), otherwise you should turn the whole engine over. But out of your words i understood that you can turn the part in the center of the drive wheel (clutch plate). When i'm not wrong that one is directly connected to the compressor. Can you still turn that one when the airco is switched to on and the serpentine belt removed?

Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

No I didn't remove the serpentine belt as I am to be honest I am not sure how to.

I guess I can't really see how there should be any leaks just from changing the compressor either but lets say I get a junk yard unit, put it in and find out it needs to be recharged, I am now thinking thats where they came in saying about possibly having leaks in the system. As far as I know, it did not leak prior to this.

I know the serpentine belt was changed with a cheap belt before and I'd like to replace that with a better quality one, how do I figure out what size or type I need and what is a good quality one?

Never had these issues on other vehicles so this is all new to me.

Thanks for the help

Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

When you change the compressor, you have to charge the freon, there is no other way. As soon as you remove one of the lines on the compressor, the freon escapes.
Removing the serpentine belt is very easy, you just put a wrench on the belt tensioner idler pulley(the left one when standing in front of it), turn it to the right and you can see the belt tension coming off. After you removed the belt, gently release the tensioner and DON'T let it go by its own, otherwise you can damage the tensioner stop. A good brand serpentine belt is the Good Year Gatorback P/N 4060875. You could also remove the old belt and take it to a shop to get the same size belt.
I still have some questionmarks on the state of the compressor. If you can turn the center part of the compressor drive wheel (the clutch plate), you turn the compressor directly. So if this is possible, the compressor is not stuck. It can be that the problem is inside the clutch and that it doesnīt engage properly. The clutch and solenoid can be changed separately without removing the compressor, so then you also wonīt loose the freon charge. So first you have to be very sure which part is turning and which one isnīt. First look at the compressor drive wheel with the engine on and the airco off. You will see the compressor drive wheel driven by the serpentine belt and it turns without any noise. The center part of the drive wheel is standing still. If this is ok, turn the airco on. Is now the drive wheel standing still and making a lot of noise? (take care with your hands and any loose clothing that it will not be caught by the belt or fan).

Re: 01 Limited AC Squealing

Ok, so I tried turning the nut in the center of the clutch and that spins the clutch around so does that mean my compressor is not locked up?

Problem fixed, the damn serpentine belt had been reinstalled incorrectly.
