02 Overland to 00 Laredo

I have a rolled 2002 Overland with a good engine which I am going to put in my 2000 Laredo. I was also thinking of swapping the transmissions. The 02 has a multispeed transmission (basically a 5 speed), while the 00 has the basic 3 speed with overdrive. I was wondering which transmission is better, and if they can be swapped.

Re: 02 Overland to 00 Laredo

Welcome to the garage.
The Overland has the 4.7 HO? It will come with the 5-45RFE transmission.
The Laredo has the 4.0 with 42RE.
The V8 only came with the 45RFE (or 5-45RFE, which was only a software flash), so i would swap the engine and transmission together. Both PCM and TCM must be swapped in as well.

Re: 02 Overland to 00 Laredo

A second question. I have the engine and transmission in currently, and I've noticed that the 02 engine has a wire running from the rear of the intake manifold, whereas the 00 doesn't. What is the wire for, and is it necessary for operation?

Re: 02 Overland to 00 Laredo

Probably the wiring for the knock sensors? Better to swap the engine with the complete wiring and keep the knock sensor function. This will retard the ignition in case of knock is sensed, to prevent engine damage.
