Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

When you changed the fluid for the first time, was there any debris into it? You mentioned the color of the fluid which was dark. Was there any burnt smell to the fluid?
I would think that if the torque converter is the problem, that it would stall always when coming to a stop and not now and then.
The valve body has several valves, from which the TCC control valve and the switch valve are used in the control of the torque converter clutch. Maybe one of them is sticking, causing a delayed release of the TCC.
Not telling you that this is the problem, but i would remove the valve body and open it up completely and check the valves for free movement.
I have no experience on the valve body from the 42RE, but looking at the manual, it is probably not a job for the weak of hart. Attached the pages from the service manual.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

it stalls 80% of the time coming to a stop, and its getting worse if i keep driving it now. no burnt fluid, it is red still.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

The TCC will only be engaged in 4th and 3rd in certain conditions. Does it still stall when driving in 2nd and coming to a stop? When it does, its still not 100% the torque converter. When it doesn´t, the problem is most probably in the valve body. The valve body can be removed with the tranny in place, so would be my first thing to check out if the valves move freely.
You say that you can barely move around, does the engine rev and the jeep doesn´t move, or does the engine stall all the time?

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

If it doesn´t stall in 2nd, the torque converter should be ok. If it still does, it can be the torque converter or still a sticking valve in the valve body.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

im going to tear down the valve body and inspect everything. im also going to try and bypass the radiator and check if its clogged. i had to take a couple days off, its getting frustrating. ill post up results in a day or 2

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

the last time i took my pan off to check the valve body, my fluid was turning black again. i pulled the whole tranny out and had a friend of mine rebuild it for 600$ with a new torque converter. all good now!

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

Did your friend find anything wrong inside the tranny which would have caused the fluid to turn black? Any worn clutches or bands or piston seal breakage?

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

This sounds like what happened to my 93 ZJ when I got rid of it. The shop told me the bands were shot and the clutches were pretty worn. Thats a good deal on the rebuild, the shop I had it at quoted $3k for a replacement!

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

Ummmm rotty119... Hate to tell you we had these same exact issues & found we had 2 sets of problems with our 02 JGC

1.) the tranny issues we had was the sensors & solenoid you changed, the fluid & the filter...

2.) when that was done the 2nd set of issues popped up. Which were the evaporative leaks! Both big & small. (P0442 & P0455) they were nested so they couldn't be cleared. It is causing the same type of stalling that you are describing in your posts. May want to check on that.

Hopefully you will find that your problems are not all tranny related.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

Afternoon from the UK...i have a similar problem that it boggs down and trys to stall engine (only the once from cold) after that its fine.... i take it from what i have read it's the solenoids. are they in or outside of gearbox and hard to change, by the way it's a 2000 wj 4.7 V8.

thanks
