03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

i own a 03 jeep GCL 2wd, i took this to a trusted tranny shop, he test drove it with me, and says this is exactly what is happening. my problem when i come to a stop sign, my torque converter stays locked and boggs my engine down till it almost quits. if i drop it into neutral before it quits, itll stop and run normal again. at higher speeds i get alot of shudder as well.

this guy told me to take out the solenoid, and clean the screens around it, that it may be clogged, or needed a rebuild. i cleaned it with brake cleaner, really wasnt bad at all. before i spend a 1k or more on a rebuild, id like to know what i can do on my own to try and fix it. i have alot of mechanical ability, presently have tranny pan off wondering if i should buy torque converter, transmission solenoid, transmission govenor, or Overdrive TCC solenoid.

any help or steering me in the right direction would be highly appreciated!!

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

no codes also. p1494 vaccum canister is only thing that will show up, no transmission codes

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

I would start with the TCC overdrive solenoid and fresh fluid/filter. If the solenoid sticks, the torque converter clutch stays pressurized and the converter stays locked. Don't believe that this is a transmission problem, but could be also something with the torque converter itself. Fluid color, smell and level are ok?
Also when you are in there, you could maybe better change the governor solenoid as well if it wasn't changed lately. They will fail at a certain moment and then you have to open it all up again. Don't know if this solenoid is expensive or not.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

the color of my fluid originally was an ugly dark color. when this problem started, i immeadiatly changed the filter and fluid same day. nothing changed. this second time i took the pan off, it was half red half dark. im assuming its mixing with the torque converter fluid to look dirty after just changing it. it also had no signs of slipping. thats what makes me think it doesnt need rebuilt.

under my research there are three parts electrical that i can find:

http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-00053397a.htm

http://www.transmissionpartsusa.com/...-000053396.htm

i cant see behind the valve train to see if there is anything else. are these the parts i need to purchase as a start?

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

Depending on what you are willing to spend, then this is the complete set of solenoids and sensor. I didnīt calculate the total, but have a look at the next site, where they sell the OEM solenoids/sensor as a kit. Bought there my (5-45RFE) solenoid pack and filters for a good price and they are very quick in response:

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

UPDATE:

so i purchased all 3 new electronic components inside, govenor, solenoid, and od/lock solenoid, now i have a different symptom immediatly as i started it. it will go into gear ok forward and reverse, but it jumps in and out of gear and now i have signs of slipping as i pull it around the driveway. my fluid color looks good, should i try and test drive it? or is there something else bigger lurking?

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

Did you get any fault code set? Maybe only when you drive it?
The parts installed are OEM?
Are you sure there is no air in the lines? Take the shift lever and move it several times from Park to 1st, stopping a few seconds in each detent. Then i would take it for a test drive on a quiet road and see what it does.

Re: 03 jeep gr.cherokee transmission problem

i drove about 10 miles on it. the slipping was actually lower on fluid than i thought. ive put 6 quarts of atf4 and so far a half a quart of lucas oil treatment. definatly not engaging and disengaging like it was. but, unfortunatly it still wants to stall occationally at a stop sign. i tried with and w/o overdrive, but it definatly wasnt a fix yet. seems to feel a little better the longer i drove around. all my parts were OEM and fluid still looks good and red. any other suggestions?
