'04 WJ Limited P0734

My 2004 WJ Limited 4.7 with a 545RFE is giving me problems with hard downshift from 4th to 3rd. Really happens around 1800-2000 RPM. I was getting the P0734 (4th Gear Ratio) and sometimes P0735 (5th Gear Ratio) codes. Odd thing is, if I shift out of overdrive while going down the road, it changes down to 3rd smoothly. I replaced both Speed Sensors with OEMs and still get the same problem. I have swapped the Speed Sensors from front to back and no difference. Also replaced Transmission Ground Strap that was broken.

Last week I replaced the Solenoid Pack again. The P0735 (Incorrect 5th Gear Ratio) went away. P0734 (Incorrect 4th Gear Ratio) showed back up. But ONLY when downshifting from 4th to 3rd still. Just a hard downshift from 4th to 3rd. CEL comes on. No "LIMP" mode. I put a new Solenoid Pack in 3 years ago when the Original started giving me P0732 (2nd Gear Ratio) and the Reverse Lights quit working. The original had the black connector and both new ones have had the White. Both have been new, not remanufactured.

Fluid was nice and red. No burnt smell or discoloration. Nothing was in the pan.

I would think if it were internal to the Transmission, it would have trouble upshifting from 3rd to 4th as well. Turning off OD to downshift causes it to downshift to 3rd very smoothly.

New OEM Solenoid Pack, new OEM Speed Sensors, new Ground Strap from Transmission to Frame.

Could it be slack in the U-Joints? (Grasping at straws)

Any thoughts from anybody?

Re: '04 WJ Limited P0734

Welcome to the garage.
The gear ratio message comes when there is a slippage from a clutch. The TCM knows what the ratio between input speed and output speed must be for each gear, so when there is a certain difference of speeds for a certain time, it will set the gear ratio message.
Hard upshifts or down shifts are caused by wrong CVI figures stored in the TCM. The TCM constantly calculates these figures, because due to clutch wear, the volumes to apply the clutches changes. You could try a battery reset first, since it will change something to the CVI´s, but best would be to do a quick learn procedure, but you will need the stealers DRBIII scanner for that.
Also the TPS can cause hard up or down shifts, when the shifting happens at the wrong points.

I also replaced the TPS. If it is a clutch, shouldn't it also slip when you turn the OD off and it shifts from 4th to 3rd? It has been very frustrating to diagnose.

Yes, you would expect it to slip in that case as well. Did you try the battery reset already?
If so, then it would be wise to do the quick learn method via the DRBIII scanner. All CVI figures will be set back to factory standard and the TCM will relearn all the shifts again.

I disconnected the battery for 1 hour and tried it, but go the same results. I will have to see about the DRBIII. I guess I will have to go to the dealer for that.

Re: '04 WJ Limited P0734

The stealer, or a specialised transmission shop can have the DRBIII.
How did this problem start by the way, suddenly, or getting worse over time?

Re: '04 WJ Limited P0734

I bought it new in '04 and it has always had some "slack" when downshifting, especially when going down hill. It really behaved similarly when the original Solenoid Pack went bad and I got the P0732 (2nd gear ratio) code. Replacing the solenoid pack cured that.

I've got 237k miles on it. Nothing rough. Kept up with maintenance well. Only put 9k on in the past year.
