12V switched power source?

OK guys n gals, got myself some gauges and I'm looking for a suitable 12v+ switched source to run them from.

I've been searching and can't seem to find an idiot proof answer. I know I can tap into the igniton wire, but which one is it? Or are there any easier/ better options?

I may be able to find the info in my Haynes manual when I get home, but it would be handy to know, before I get there, so I can just crack on and get them fitted.

Cheers.

Re: 12V switched power source?

Hi Aaron, there are ofcourse a lot of possibilities, but here are a few:

1) On the junction block under the steering wheel fuse 21 (10A), a Dark Blue/White wire runs from the fuse to A/C compressor/EVAP purge solenoid and shift assy. Only under power in Run. When you put a lower amp fuse for the gauges, you will never blow the 10 A main fuse.
2) On the junction block fuse 30 (10A), a White/Red wire goes from the fuse to the radio only, but has power in Run and Acc.

Re: 12V switched power source?

Cheers guys That's some great info.

Frank, I'll probably run with option 1, due to the location, it should be easier to run the wiring.

Dave, do those fuses prevent the existing ones from blowing? As far as I understand, I have to be careful not to draw too much current from a secondary source or something

Sorry for sounding like such a noob, vehicle electrics is not my forte by a long shot

Cheers again

Re: 12V switched power source?

Not sure about that one but a lot of them have 2 fuses.1 for the original circuit and 1 for the tap. At the very least everything is still protected through a single fuse on the cheap ones.

Re: 12V switched power source?

Gauges are very low power consuming, so that should give no problem for any of the circuits.
