1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

Hello,
I need some help with this issue i am having with my 1999 jeep grand cherokee laredo. The jeep has almost 259,000 mile on it. Ok this is my problem I back in may replaced the right front hub bearing, also replaced both axle's right and left as well as the rotors and calipers and break pads.

Ok now on for my probLEM in late october this year we got a snow storm here in CT i put the jeep in full time 4 wheel drive everything was wonderful. I was driving and i heard a pop like a humming noise i pulled over to see what it was nothing was dripping from the jeep i get back in and start to drive and i hear a grinding noise coming from under nieth the jeep the left front axle area. I drove the jeep home the 20minute ride via surface streets i got home and i parked the jeep. It starts up just fine it shifts just fine and the right side does not make any noise at all no break noise or nothing. the left front area is making a grind noise like metal on metal like somthing came loose or popped. When i drive the jeep it makes the noise at all speeds( the grinding) it gets low at low speeds and at high speeds it gets louder but kinda gos a way but never really does.

I need some ones help please as this is my only way to and from work i am hoping praying somthing simple.

Also when i turn i do not have the clicking sound like most people do it grinds just like when i am driving please help me out thank you Nick

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

Check the front diff fluid for metal flakes and fluid level. If ok, check the T-case fluid for level and flakes.
Is your jeep a quadra drive?

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

Jack up the left front wheel and use a stand for safety. Do you hear and/or feel anything strange when rotating the wheel? Problem could be in the left axle CV joint or left wheel bearing.
I remember an other member some time ago who had a noise, changed axles and whatever more, but finally found the drive chain inside the T-case with too much slack and it was skipping teeth. When you put the T-case in 4x4, does it change the noise?

Front driveshafts on these things are known to fail too...at the joint. You could also have a brake pad that failed or a caliper that isn't releasing. Does it smell "hot" near the wheel?

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

If you just replaced your front right wheel bearing assembly in May (assuming it was bad), the first place I would check is the front left wheel bearing assembly. When one of my wheel bearing assemblies went bad, I replaced both front assemblies. When one goes bad, it's usually only a short time before the other goes bad also.

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

Hi,Thank you to all who are trying to help me figure this out. I did change the right front wheel bearing. The reason for changing it was because my right rotor was getting warped and since i got the changed it does'nt wobble or warp the rotor. In may i had both front axles replaced all is well. The jeep breaks good and the left rotor has no grooves and make no noise. Although when i was breaking the other day at around 65 the steering wheel kinda shook ( death wobble i guess you call it) i have had the death wobble before and hence replaced the right front wheel bearing fixed that. I think maybe the left wheel bearing is the reason of the grinding as it is starting to wobble when breaking.

I also may think that it coulde be the left front rotor is now warped because of this and i may even have a stuck caliper or bad break pad like some one on here said. I took it to a mechanic today and they test drove it with me and they said it might be the bearing in the diff. He the mechanic said he did'nt think it was the left wheel bearing because the noise sounded(was) going faster than what the jeep was doing.

I called a jeep place about 35 minutes from me they have diffs for sale and they quoted me $600 for the front diff and then another $400 to install would that be a good price? I also have a question if it is just the pinion bearing in the diff how much would that cost to get fixed? should i have the front diff rebuild or get the used one? I am very thankful for all the input i have recieved so far.

The caliper issue i am kinda hoping for as today i had to run to the store and when breaking i heard the grinding noise but... it was grinding even before i was break but when i was breaking i thought of the calpier maybe no releasing and is also what could be wrong. I have not smelled for the hotness as some one on here has said to try and do i will do that tomorrow take the jeep out and let yall know. The left rotor has no wear to it. Also because of the past wobble when breaking and warped rotor on the right side when the right bearing was replaced all went away. so i guess i will await some more imput and i guess i'll go from there thank you to all.

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

When a brake rotor is warped, you will feel it as a pulsation in the brake pedal when braking. Donīt know if you still have the Teves calipers on, or if the brakes are already upgraded to the Akebono, because the Teves are too well known for warping the discs. To find out if a caliper is not releasing well, just touch the wheel by hand and compare the temperature with the other wheels. Do not try to touch the discs, because they become hot after braking and can burn yourself.
Did you take a sample of the diff fluid after driving a bit, to see if there is some metal in it? I would suspect when it starts making loud noises, that if it is a bearing, that there would be some fine metal flakes in the fluid.

Hi, I do in fact still have the teves calipers I i have read they they are a no good caliper. I was thinking about changing to the akebono but would'nt know where to start. When it stops raining i'll go check the diff fluid for metal flakes

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

To rule out problems with the CV joints or U joints on the propeller shaft, you could just remove the front shaft and see if that makes any difference in the noise. You will then also release any stress going to the pinion and should have a lot less or even no noises anymore. You could feel the CV or U joints on the propeller shaft to see if they have play or make any noise when you move them by hand. If that seems to be ok and the noise is gone with the propeller shaft removed, it almost must be the pinion bearing or even a problem between ring and pinion gear. The shaft is mounted with 6 bolts on each side. Just mark the coupling with the housing where it is mounted to, so you can put it back exactly in the same position where it was before, to prevent eventual vibration.

Re: 1999 jeeo grand cherokee laredo grinding please help!

In July I went through the similar sets of problems that you are describing and hope the following may help you.

Symptoms for diff were:
Constant wrrrling noise on and off power, but disappeared above 120kms
Diff oil was burnt (due to low levels and had slight silver colour to it)
Noise sounded like it moved between left side, right side to sometimes from the back.
Diff specialist replaced bearings, Crown and pinion gearing. Costs not compatible as I live in Australia but it cost me $3000

I still had a wynning noise, but no wrryling noise so:
I replaced the front rotors and Teves calipers for Akebonos (really easy to change yourself see youtube- Seasbrothers Jeep 4x4), part of the noise is gone and I feel confident that brakes won't play up at all.

That's it so far and I still have noise, so I'm kind of looking at what's happening with you to see what way I may go next.
